American To Launch Miami-St. Kitts Service

Tue May 11, 2004 8:03 am

American Airlines will launch non-stop service between Miami and St. Kitts on 1 November 2004, the same day they relaunch non-stop service between Miami and St. Lucia/Hewanorra. This is the second new American Airlines destination from Miami revealed in the past few days, following last Friday's revealing of Miami-Bermuda service, which starts 2 March 2005. The new service, likely operating daily, will use a 737-800 and is still pending final approval. Schedules have not been uploaded and it is not yet available for booking, and it might be at least two months before it is finally announced. St. Kitts is the 15th non-stop destination American Airlines has added from Miami since June 2002.

American Eagle currently offers three daily ATR-72 flights between St. Kitts and San Juan.

The new St. Kitts service, as well as new Bermuda and St. Lucia service, is to protect market share from US Airways, which is stealing mainland traffic through Charlotte. Look for Miami-Antigua and Miami-Grenada to also be relaunched in 2005.

Years ago, when AA pulled out of this markets with mainline service they demanded that the Lesser Antilles islands of the Caribbean that wanted to keep their service supplement the carrier as it "wasn't profitable". Now when US goes in there and is sucessful, it is now worth returning.

How you can not love AA and the thought process behind the larger, legacy network carriers.
