Fly727... funny you mention the VAE2500s. At Reno Air we had an MD
-90 (which also uses the V2500s) enroute from ORD
lose an access panel cover on the number one engine. Nobody knew it until ATC at RNO
informed the cockpit they were missing a piece of their engine. Who knows where it flew off! It's probably sitting in some farm in the midwest!
If you look closely at the picture below, just aft of the MD
-90 decal on the engine their are two small access panel covers, one in front of the other. It was one of these that was lost during the flight. Obviously there was no ill affect since the pilots weren't aware of it until ATC in RNO
