News -Iberia A320 Loses Engine Cover In Mid-flight

Text in Spanish.

Rough translation, Flight IB 432, an A320 - not sure which one at the moment - lost the engine cowl in flight about 15 minutes after takeoff around 7 this morning. It returned safely to Madrid where the passengers were put aboard another aircraft and sent on their way, albeit a couple of hours late.

Anyone in Madrid got any other news?

The A320 CFM engine cowls are notorious for coming off in flight. They look fastened but are not. I know AC has lost a couple over the years.

I know AC had at one time a special sign off for cowls closed properly when they were opened. I do not know if they still have this.

Correct; and so has Mexicana I think back in 1992 or so.

Fly727:

Mexicana has never had any A320 with CFM engines as far as im concerned, only the 319's but of course the were not around back in 1992.

I think the most unusual thing about this incident is that it was not just one engine, but the covers of both engines!

Either a mechanic has been very naughty and not correctly secured the covers after checking, or this is a very freaky incident.

I also find it strange that the covers of both engines fell or flew off!

The fact that both cowlings came undone indicates that a single mechanic probably worked on both engines and made the same mistake on both sides.

Luckily it looks like the "liberated" cowling did not strike or do any damage to the wing or fuselage.

N79969, actually the right cowling hit the tail on the right side, but with no serious damage to it

If you look closely to the bottom photo in reply 9, the damage is clearly visible just above the B of Iberia in the tail.

Cheers,

Correct. But I was not implying that it was a CFM-powered aircraft. Actually it was one with VAE2500s; sorry I didn't make my self clear enough.

I had flown on this particular aircraft. It was very noisy, especially the engines. The take-off was really scary, the whole plne shook, and when it landed, I thought the wings blew out. But while in air I didn't feel anything.

@744, in Europe we have very restrictive rules concerning aircraft noise , esp. for take off and landing. I am sure the manifacturer is doing a good job in this. And the best aircraft of the world is not that noisy? lllolll

Fly727... funny you mention the VAE2500s. At Reno Air we had an MD-90 (which also uses the V2500s) enroute from ORD to RNO lose an access panel cover on the number one engine. Nobody knew it until ATC at RNO informed the cockpit they were missing a piece of their engine. Who knows where it flew off! It's probably sitting in some farm in the midwest!

If you look closely at the picture below, just aft of the MD-90 decal on the engine their are two small access panel covers, one in front of the other. It was one of these that was lost during the flight. Obviously there was no ill affect since the pilots weren't aware of it until ATC in RNO made notice.
