CGN Is Planning Low-Cost Flights To The USA

Wed May 12, 2004 1:41 am

The airport Cologne/Bonn is planning low-cost flights to the United States. Michael Garvens (general manager of the airport) told the German magazine "Der Spiegel" that he is currently talking with well-known US airlines.

The destination of the new route is probably a city in the Middle West of the United States, already existing low-cost airlines from Germany like Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express could operate feeder flights from German as well as European cities.

The oneway fares will start at 100 EUR, tickets should be bookable via the internet only. Amenities like lounges or frequent flyer programs will be not available to save costs.

The full article (unfortunately only in German) can be found here:

Can you say ATA?!

I am surprised that this topic hasn't been posted earlier.
I had read about this two weeks ago or so.
Just didn't have time myself.

I think they work together with ATA (American Trans Air)!

For personal reasons I'd love it to be MKE, too but I have a feeling it will be IND.

Oh, I just saw that the article is from April 24th Embarrassment. Anyway, I heard it in the radio news today (on WDR 2) but I didn't find anything on the WDR homepage, so I searched via the Yahoo news search, then I got this article.

I am just hoping for the L-1011!
That would cut a hole in my budget but it'd be worth it.

I wish it were still as easy as it used to be to fly with those birds.

I am just hoping for the L-1011!

That would be great, if the flight will be operated by a L1011, I will book it because I never flew on this aircraft type and that would be the easiest way to get it.

If they do use any L1011s for the overseas flights it will be for a short time considering the L1011 is pretty much out of the picture for many airlines.
The next generation of aircraft is just around the corner!

This is such a joke (to quote a favourite phrase of of one of the above guys  Big grin  Laugh out loud ) :

100 EUR o/w + tax means 250 EUR rtn including tax - a fare which can be routinely found on almost all normal carriers. Just someone out for cheap publicity...

Interesting.
However don't expect to see a 1011. The company has already stated that services will be operated with 752's, should this become a reality.

The inflight service? It will be good. Like it is on our Hawaii-services.

Look for 757 service from Chicago Midway with a tech stop in Bangor ME or Gander then on to points in Europe.  Big grin

You are correct, last year I paid 277 EUR for DUS-CDG-JFK-CDG-DUS on AF incl. lots of miles.

Well, so it is not low cost, isn't it?  Insane Too bad, 100 euros would have been worth a trip just to fly a good old L1011!

Well if they have those fares year round, I'd for sure call it low cost.
Since it's half of what you pay on a regular restricted ticket in the low season, when you don't get a super special offer and a quarter than you'd pay between July and October this year.

Please keep it calm guys, this is not a revolutionary new concept, it is just what long-range charter flights with high-density configured aircraft are today. Only the seats won't be sold by brokers and tour operators, but directly to the customers.

And I am also pretty sure that we will see several renowned European airlines match their fare with similar offers, but also including frequent flyer miles and "full frills" onboard service.

Don't take me wrong, more competition means more choices and better fares for us customers. It is just not a very definitive plan yet and certainly not such a totally kick-ass new concept if you think about it.  Smile

While not directly related to Germany, there's little or no point operating a low-cost airline between the UK and USA, as airfares are already low during the off-season - even 180.00 pounds return sometimes. However, there is probably a need for low-cost travel from the UK to the USA during the summer, when fares soar considerably - it's not unusual to see fares for 400-500 or more to NYC from LHR and even more to the west. So it would be good to have cheap fares during the summer. You could acquire a couple of old 747-200s or DC-10s, but two major problems would exist: a) what would you do with the aircraft during the off-season when they're not needed; and b) what would you do with the staff you have hired?

LN-MOW, will Transatlantic 752's have the new Business Class they're installing on domestic birds?
