First A380 Completed On May 27th

Wed May 12, 2004 3:52 am

On this local TV show (link below) about the new A380 final assembly line inauguration, they say that the static test aircraft will be assembled by May 27th. On that day they will move it to the static test building to be able to start assembling the first flying aircraft. This first flying aircraft is supposed to be on its wheels by July. I wonder if the static test aircraft will have landing gears? Any thoughts?

Will anybody be in Toulouse to take a first pic of the completed aircraft on May 27th?

I would be very surprised if there was no landing gears on it, I guess a lot of breaking tests are going to be made with this test craft?

It's made for "Static tests". As I understand it, they're just going to bend the wings a number of time and finally break them. They will probably pressurized/depressurized it a number of time to see how this thing ages. This aircraft will not move any more once it's in the static tests building.

Maybe they'll put landing gears to bring it there and then remove them to install it on an aircraft where they are useful?

Are they assembling the first flying A380 already? I would assume they are already collecting it's various parts if they plan to have it "on it's wheels" in July.

I hope somebody gets pictures!

cheers, Ralph

"Are they assembling the first flying A380 already?"

No, they'll start assembling it on May 27th. The parts are completed though. They must be travelling to the assembly site right now.

What they are assembling is the first structure which will be destroyed in tests.

Already? Man Airbus seems eager to rush the competition!!!! It's amazing it took them this short of a time to build the world's newest giant, and also the world's biggest giant!!! (In terms of length, it is 11 feet short than the A346.)

A380900,
Thanks for the update. I understand that the first flight is supposed to take place the first quarter of 2005. Man, I can't wait to see the A380 in the air!

Quite a lot of the parts for the first flying aircraft have already arrived, including the wing boxes, nose section and cockpit and the forward fuselage section I know for sure, and a RR trent 900 which will fly on an A340 test bed!
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

Does anyone know, if this "static test aircraft" will resemble a flying A380? IOW, will we get neat pictures of it to compare against the earlier CGI images released by Airbus?

These parts would have arrived from Germany to Nantes. That's where the first two forward section of the fuselage are built and then sent to Toulouse. The last comes from directly from Germany without being assembled in Nantes.

Do you know if these completed sections have arrived to Toulouse?

These are pics from the static test airplane fuselage on its way to Toulouse.

A380900,

Great pictures!  Big thumbs up

I believe that if Airbus really wants great publicity for the A380-800 they should regularly show pictures of the various parts of the first flying prototype (I've heard it will get the registration F-WWOW, of all things  Insane ) arriving and being assembled on their website.  Smile

Hey Stas,

that isn't entirely true. We do get Kalitta and Southern 747s from time to time and in the last month we've gotten 5 AN-124s from both Volga-Dnepr and Polet!! Smile Smile

You'd be quite surprised about what aircraft we get around here!

finally my ship has come in: the A380 is about to fly!! (major sarcasm).

Anybody know if the French-looking John Kerry will be there to christen the new French masterpiece?

If he gets elected you gotta know AF1 will be either an A380 or A340

EAL757,
Bush or Kerry may win - they will stay in their 747-AF1 and from 2009 on they will be refuled in air by Lockheed-built A332 Tankers  Wink/being sarcastic
BTW:
Kerry pretty much is Yale-looking for me.
Airbus is EUROPEAN and not French - as discussed dozens of times here.
If you don't like the aircraft - your prob - OK. If you don't like Airbus at all - also your prob - also OK. If you don't like Europe - let's start a discussion on another site - not a.net.
