UK-USA Flights: Which Have Highest O&D Pax?

Wed May 12, 2004 7:45 am

Needless to say there are a large number of flights between the USA and London. But of these, which flights have the highest number of O&D passengers DURING THE SUMMER? I assume these: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Orlando and Miami (not necessarily in that order).

I would assume Orlando has the highest percentage since there are no connections in MCO. But I think JFK since it has the most flights and LAX SFO AND MIA all are close but don't have close to as many flights as JFK maybe LAX is the closet. I would think ORD would have the most connections.

I'd imagine Boston would rank in there. This Summer we'll have 7 daily flights to the UK (6 to London, 1 to Manchester), plus another flight to London on VS 3x weekly. Of those, three are morning flights, including VS' new 3x weekly flight with very few connection possibilities given the early departures (VS at 0800, BA at 0810, and AA at 0900) and late arrivals (VS at 1930, BA at 1940, and AA at 2020).

All told, these will be the flights to the UK this Summer from Boston:

American Airlines
AA156 BOS-LHR 0900-2020 777 (Daily)
AA108 BOS-LHR 1910-0635 777 (Daily)
AA96 BOS-MAN 2000-0720 757 (Daily)

British Airways
BA238 BOS-LHR 0810-1940 777 (Daily)
BA212 BOS-LHR 1750-0515 744 (Daily)
BA214 BOS-LHR 2030-0805 777/744 (Daily)

Virgin Atlantic
VS54 BOS-LHR 0800-1930 343 (Tues, Fri, Sun)
VS12 BOS-LHR 0725-0655 744 (Daily)

While I can't say much for Virgin or American, BA does not get a huge amount of connecting traffic, only about 15-30 per afternoon flight, at most 10 for a morning flight. Connecting traffic out of London can vary, however BA238 usually does not have more than 30-40 connections per flight.

During the Summer, however, I'd say JFK, SFO, and possibly IAD, have higher O&D numbers. Miami and Orlando not quite as much as the Summer is generally Florida's slow tourist season, and while flights are busy, I believe this stems for from business travel, many of whom connect in from other cities in Latin America. LAX may also have high O&D numbers, and SFO is one of the most popular cities for European travellers during the Summer, so I wouldn't be surprised if these cities, and Boston, rounded out the top for O&D, Summer travel.

I was thinking that LON-NYC must have the highest number.

British Airways - up to 11 flights a day to NYC
Continental - 2 daily flights to EWR
American - 6 daily flights to JFK
United - 2 daily flights to JFK
Virgin Atlantic 5 flights daily to NYC
Air India - several weekly flights (daily?)
Kuwait Airlines - several weekly flights (daily?)

That is a lot of seats.

Only three weekly LHR-ORD flights. The other three AI flights go AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-ORD

[Sidenote: AI also serves CDG-EWR daily]

It really depends on the carrier and city pair. For instance, VS has very limited interline capabilities within the USA, so chances are most passengers are O&D on the USA side. However, VS does have many interline agreements via UK, most notably with BD, but also KQ, EK, GF, UL, and MK. That said, I would suspect that only a small percentage (less than 20%) are originating or continuing beyond LON. The US carriers, on the otherhand are probably continuing onward past the initial point of arrival in the USA, but most likely are O&D on the Europe side. Likewise BA, will have a high percentage of transit on the UK side, but probably more O&D on the US, despite their membership in Oneworld and codeshare agreements with AA.

This is speculation, but based on the loads I've seen, I'd say its a fair approximation.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.
