Bwia Tristar Rudder Larger Than Normal?

Wed May 12, 2004 9:05 am

Hey,

I read somewhere that BWIA's Tristar's rudders were larger than the regular Tristar 500 rudders? Is this true? It was said that they needed it to be larger to takeoff from shorter runways. To me, from pictures, they look the same as other -500s.

The 3 originally ordered by BW had slightly `deeper' rudders. Emphasis on the word `slightly'...it wasn't very obvious.

BWIA had slightly larger/deeper rudders installed on their aircraft becuase they needed to lower the Vmcg airspeed to enable them to take off from shorter runways at high weights.

This was mainly for the smaller Carribean islands they served with the L1011.
