BA Starting 3rd Flight To HKG

Wed May 12, 2004 6:52 pm

Just got an e-mail from BA stating that it is introducing 3 extra flights to HKG effective from 5th June.

BA 031 LHR HKG DEP 2110 ARR 1555+1 (SAT/MON/THU)
BA 032 HKG LHR DEP 0100 ARR 0700 (MON/WED/SAT)

Not alot of publicity about these extra flights to HKG, never knew they were going to put them on??? Or am I being ignorant??  Confused

does anybody know BA's full rotation plan for these HKG flights? parking is expensive in HKG so I wonder why they rest so long there.

Why don't they just fly them to other Asian Cities like Taipei or Kuala Lumpur?

Umm... any plans for VS to start a second daily flight?

BA did fly onwards to Taipei and Manila a couple of years ago as I remembered vividly (having been on one of those flights). However, I remembered reading through of one the threads on a.net a couple of years ago saying that it was more profitable for BA parking their aircrafts at HKG than flying a short leg to Taipei or Manila. It's just a matter of simple economics. (however, do correct if I'm wrong)

As to United Airline's point, Why don't they just fly them to other Asian Cities like Taipei or Kuala Lumpur?

BA codeshares with CX flights to Kuala Lumpur, Auckland and Seoul, taking advantage of being part of One World Alliance.
But what I always seem to find illogical is codesharing with CX to Seoul, it just doesn't seem to make any sense, i.e. 12-hour flight from LHR-HKG, then HKG-ICN 3-hour flight, as the route is SO blatantly indirect, compared to e.g. LHR-HKG-AKL routing?? Does anyone have an answer to this??

A third overnight flight ex-HKG? I know that CX started a daytime flight HKG-LHR - why not try to tap into that traffic? Or is the market too small for such a flight?

CPH-R,
I do think the market is quite small for daytime flights to LHR, however this is only judging by the fact that CX is using a A343 compared to the normal B744 on this route. I think the reasons, from my personal experience, is that one gets more choices of onward connecting flights at LHR if the flights arrives early in the morning. Tried booking a flight from HKG to NCL via LHR, it is only possible to get a direct connection if the flight leaves HKG in the evening.

Having said that, BA should try put on an early morning flight ex-HKG!!

Chilledflyer - if you think code-sharing to ICN is silly - travellers between the UK and Malaysia still can't figure out their code-share to/from KUL via HKG (!). Not only does it add unnecessary flying time southwest/northeast as a detour - their airfares are hardly competitive - being one of the most expensive options between Malaysia and the UK!!!  Nuts

Good news for me, as I will go back home(HK) on that day  Big thumbs up but I think I will stick with CX though :p
I just wonder will they stick with their 744 or switch to 777?

The market won't be small, especially during the beginning and the end of the holidays, i.e. summer, christmas and easter, there are lots of overseas students need a ticket to go back home, as all the direct flights are always fully booked, I needed to find alternatives on some occasions...I heard about the load was ok during the low season...

Mas777: I totally agree with you! Their prices are hardly competitive although I am stuck with them as I'm based up in NCL. BA's being its LOGICAL-SELF as usual.....?!?!?! Big grin

United Airline asked:-

"Umm... any plans for VS to start a second daily flight?"

The second daily flight by VS goes hand in hand with the start of the Sydney route which hopefully will commence in December 2004.

OK...so it means that the EC hasn't really made up their mind on giving CX fifth freedom rights to/from LHR!! I reckon the EC will be quite stringent and will not easily approve the relevant measures.

If say they do, do you think VS is being too optimistic operating a 2nd flight to HKG??

In addition to BA's 3rd flight to HKG, that means there will be 8 flights on certain days of the week! Is there realistically such high demand for HKG?

Chilledflyer - as I do most of my flying to Malaysia and Singapore - BA's departure left me without the open-jaw option so went Dutch and Malaysian and all my colleagues, friends and family have never looked back  Big thumbs up

Better service, better connections and all round happier Flying Brightonians...  Smokin cool

So, does this rule out HKG for QF's routing into LHR using its extra slots?

No I do not think it would unless QF was to codeshare on these flights.
