Sun Country's New Service To ANC

Wed May 12, 2004 10:39 pm

Sun Country Airlines is quietly starting new service to Anchorage Alaska from Minneapolis starting May 28th. The once-a-day round-trip will fly four days a week, Mon-Wed-Fri-Sat, leaving MSP at 6am CDT and arriving ANC 8:45am ADT. The return flight will leave ANC 10am ADT and arrive at MSP 6:15pm CDT. Equipment will be a Boeing 737-800.

There are few trip reports on Sun Country. It would be great if someone could record their MSP-ANC experiences.

They've been planning this service for awhile -- I priced some flights to ANC a months ago, and a DL (via CVG to MSP) / SY combo was displayed as the cheapest.

But four weekly flights each way is a lot considering traffic is virtually all-O/D...

SY's way of selling two one-way fares rather than one round-trip fare probably will benefit the competition.  Smile

pretty much every low fare carrier sells two one way tickets. It's one of the good things. They don't gauge you on a one way ticket if you aren't buying a round-trip.

Well done with the new service from MSP-ANC this summer and will do well for more passengers to ANC for this summer.

Or maybe it'll just take traffic away from NW? Maybe that explains why NW's operating three less B753 flights on this route this summer (vs. last summer)...

Here's a funny story.

I've booked a trip with ff miles, IAD-ANC, the weekend of Oct 8th-11th. The WorldPerk's computer would let me go on Northwest for 37,500 miles or on Delta, through Salt Lake City, for 25,000 miles (what's up with that?). So, I booked Delta instead of Northwest -- on Northwest's computer -- to save miles.  Smile

Btw, when I checked with Delta, it turned out they've switched from a 757-200 to a 767-300 carrying 100 additional pax. It seems to me that will also cut in Northwest's loads.

So, this year we've got F9, HP, DL, NW, CO, AS, UA, AA, and SY flying into ANC. In addition, there are regularly scheduled flights by CI and DE.

That's a lot of tourists.

DL's ran a B763 and a B752 SLC-ANC for the past several years... looks like the latter's been upgraded to a B762 (additional twenty seats or so)... those B762 are popping up everywhere this summer!!! I guess DL's pulling some of them from the desert.
