United 747-400 Upper Deck Seats

Thu May 13, 2004 5:49 am

Going to SYD, and wondering about the Business Class Upper Deck bulkhead seats 12Aand 12B. http://www.seatguru.com says they're a little too close to the bulkhead, but I think an advantage is that nobody can put their seat back into you.

Has anyone flown a United 747-400, Business Class, Upper Deck? Do the passengers in 12A and 12B look cramped or cozy?

Cheers-- Jeff

If you can get row 15, that is truly the best. I never like bulkhead seats, as there is limited storage.

Ever since UA increased seat pitch to 55-60 inches, the upper deck seems extremely spacious. 26 seats is nice compared to some airlines that put 32 or more seats up there. I have sat in those seats before on LAX-AKL (while they were still flying the route). It will be a pleasant experience, and much better than the forward section of the lower deck that has 5 less inches of legroom. The only problem is getting out of the window seat while the aisle seat is fully reclined. But if you are clever and flexible it isn't to much of a problem. Row 15 is the best, but occasionally you will be "magically" reassigned at checkin in that row if you are not full fare or 1K.

I have been in 12B twice, I was very cozy. The bulkhead, however, was hideously coloured and not soothing to the eyes at all.

Seat 12AB are very good seat. I really enjoyed not having anyone recline into my lap during the flight. Another advantage I liked very much is that I was able to get out from the window seat without having to wake the passenger in the aisle seat. If privacy is important to you during a flight then seat 12A is an excellent seat. However, 12B sees a lot of foot traffic of people going to the restroom, but none the less still very good seat.

12AB are good seats. I prefer 12A just because it's a window seat. Don't worry about the storage as there is lot of room in the side storage compartment under the window.

If you are on the UA 744s in C class, then most the seats are better than the 55 inch ones (which are already something to write home about.) Do not sit in rows 6-8 on the lower deck as there were no rows removed there. However, rows 25 and 26 C,D, and F (the middle three) have 50% more legroom as before when there were three rows in the same space. Most of the upper deck is also great because of the amount of seats they had to take out. Have a great flight on the Friendly Skies of United!
The opinions expressed here are mine and not necessarily those of Delta Air Lines.

On that 747-400 flight I took, I was in 15A Chicago-Denver... great seat. Also flew New York-Hong Kong on UA821 a few years ago in 15A. I think it was the best seat in the house upstairs. Slept for at least 9 hours. So yah, I encourage you to book 15A/B if you're able.

Here's a shot of the UA Business seats on the B744. This is not from the upper deck, but I'm pretty sure the seats are the same.

To toss in my two cents, I like the seats in row 15 in the sense that you have all that open area in front of you. My only dislike, is that I like having the storage compartments alongside the seat so that you can keep things readily accessible for most of the flight. So, I think that I prefer seats with that storage area. However, they almost always place the cart of snacks in front of row 15, so that is a perk!

I have never sat in 12AB, so I don't know. My only comment would be to avoid the rear left (port) section of seats. The online seat diagram shows that there are only three rows of seats in this part, however, many 744s (not sure if all or they are in the process of changing them) have four rows here and there is a little less leg room than in the other three sections. All 3 744s that we were on during the trip had four rows in this section. All of the others had more legroom. I sat in each, and you could tell that there was a few inches difference. Still, it is quite nice up there, and I like traveling up there a lot. Hopefully, I will get to do it again in Sept. if I get time off to travel with my folks to Australia. Both are going for business, so I should have plenty of time to sight-see. Lucky them, they were even upgraded already from business to first on the SYD-LAX return portion!

Just a word of caution to anyone wanting to sit on UA's upper deck. Make sure you're not bringing the ubiquitous 21" roll-aboard with you. There is absolutely no place to store these on the upper deck. They will not fit in either the overhead, or the side storage lockers.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

One thing I have to give Credit to UA is that out of all the OLD style business class seats (Pre- Flat Seats) UA has a good product. That picture Raybolt posted is the one I sat on (I sat on the Upper deck) One row in front of the emergency exit. If you can try and get the emergency row.
The UA seats are comfortable and I was able to sleep for 5 hous from SYD-SFO. Mind you that was back in 2001 when they first upgraded the J Class seats.

BTW the first photo in this tread are NOT the seats on the 744, they look like the previous ones.

Actually, Cx123, but the seats pictured in the photos are indeed the same seats which are in the current UB cabins.

tallguy14,
If your names has anything to do with your height then go with the middle section of row 25 and 26. You will love the space and I cant describe how much room you will have.

Iowa74fan - it's been about a year since I was in row 15 on one of these flights, but I'm 99% sure that since they reconfigured the seat pitch to 60in you do in fact have a storage area at row 15 - I know in the old config it wasn't there, but on my last flight I'm sure it was....

My two cents:

I just flew on a United 744, upper deck 2 weeks ago. My personal opinion is that I would take rows 15-18. I personally prefer row 16, plenty of legroom (more so than in the front section of the upper deck) and plenty of storage. The side bins make it a little difficult to see out the window. The cabin itself is very comfortable and quiet, I would highly recommend it versus downstairs. If you go to the Swiss united website (posted above), it shows the old configuration, with 4 rows on the port side and 5 on the starboard. Currently, all UA 744 upper decks have 3 rows on the port and 4 on the starboard.

As for the rollaboard, you CAN bring them upstairs, there is a small closet that the FA will use to store your bag. It's just to the right of the stairwell as you reach the top of the stairs.

Let me know if you have any other questions. Enjoy your flight!

Star_world,
That could be. I just flew up top on UA this past winter, but I was in row 14 most of the time and in 16 for one. I did not get a chance to look, so you are probably right about the relocation of the seat. I have not flown in row 15 for a couple of years.

You'll be fine in 12A or B. I've sat in 12 A before and I am nearing 6 feet tall and I was fine. I still had room leftover between my feet and the bulkhead on a full recline. And as has been mentioned in previous posts, it is very easy not to bother your next door neighbor when going to the bathroom in row 12. The only negative I can think of is traffic and noise from peple going to the bathroom. Sometimes there could also be someone trying to read your magazine while waiting in line. Just hope it's a single lady I guess.

Its better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than be in the air wishing you were on the ground. Fly safe!
