BA's Fleet

Tue Jan 12, 1999 1:40 am

Has anyone flown on BA? Where from and on what type of aircraft? How would you say it is in comparison to United and American across the Atlantic? What about Virgin?

I have flown BA, Virgin and AA.
I flew 747 with BA and Virgin and a 757/767 with american. I think that BA is as good as Virgin and I think AA is not as good as either of them. I like the TV screens in the back of the seats but that is really all Virgin have over BA. With BA if the plane has mechanical problems you get a new plane and with Virgin you have to wait.

I have flown with BRITISH AIRWAYS on

  • B767 Moscow - London
  • B757 London - Moscow, London - Glasgow (Shuttle service)
  • B737 Glasgow - London
  • BAe146 Glasgow - London

However, I haven't flown on any of the airlines you wanted to hear the comparison to :). All I can say is, I have enjoyed ALL the flights with BA: excellent service, smooth take-offs and landings (I realised we touched the ground only when engines started to reverse. I have never experienced such landings before.), nice FAs and planes in a good condition (well, a B757 London-Moscow was quite old-looking inside).

British Airways and United Airlines probally has the same type of fleet. Both airlines have the 737,747,757,767,777, DC-10, A319 and A320.

Of course British Airways has the A319 and A320 on order. British Airways has the world's largest fleet of Boeing 747-400 aircraft and United Airlines has the world's third largest fleet of 747-400 aircraft. And UA has the most 747-400's in the U.S also United Airlines has the most 777-200's in the world. British Airways the most 777-200's outside the U.S.

United Airlines and British Airways fleet is almost the same and both airlines have a very modern and young fleet.

American Airlines has alot of old aircraft. But has many aircraft on order to replace them. But that will take time of course. Virgin Atlantic Airways will have a good fleet once they get there A340-500 and A340-600 aircraft.

I've been flying BA since they were formed in the 70s. I've flown from LHR to:
Glasgow, Viscount, Vanguard, BAC-111, Trident, 737, 757, 767
Bremen-Hannover, Trident, 737
Geneva, 757
Zurich, 757
Prague, 737, 767
Vienna, 737
Budapest, 767

I've never flown with Virgin and the only US airlines I've flown are Delta and Northwest. I would rate those two and BA as the best I've flown. I've always had better food on those flights and the crew are very helpful and professional. The only reason I don't always fly BA is for the variety.

I thought that Japan Air line had the world's largest B747 fleet. Isn't that right?

Yeah, I think DC10-30...

...has a point here. According to Boeing's site, JAL is the biggest customer for B747s, having purchased a 100 copy recently.

Confirmation please guys...

JAL has the largest 747 fleet.

BA has the largest 747-400 fleet followed by Singapore International Airlines. Then United Airlines.

Oh, I see...

Wed Jan 13, 1999 2:27 am that thing was about B747-400, not 747s in general. Okay, thanks!

BA rox. Young, modern fleet - more adoring fans :).
