744 - What Are These?

Fri May 14, 2004 2:59 am

What are the two black things on the fuselage just behind the pitots?

If you mean those jagged hook like things, they are sensors. If you mean the black things behind the cockpit, they are windows.

I assume you are talking about the black things under the first window group...those are the pitot tubes. They measure the airspeed of the airplane.

Rob- You can be sarcastic sometimes! They are indeed sensors and I can't actually see anything else behind the pilots so this must be what you mean!

Thanks Dave  Big thumbs up

7 windows from the front, lower deck, one black thing directly under it and one further down. Not the pitots, I know what a pitot is and what it does.

Edited to remove sarky comment.....

Wish I could edit the pic and draw a circle round what I'm referring to, usually the angle of attack indicator is on the port side. Thanks for the input anyway, I have this pic as my desktop and wonder what they are every time I switch on!

Maybe tech/ops would be an option to be sure!!

I reckon they are air pressure sensors

They're on both sides of the aircraft. Just like the pitot static tubes.
Theres one for the pilot and one for the F/O :p

Hi Andz,

Maybe you should post this thread in the technical/operations section of this forum. There you will definately get your answer. It's a good question though, I'm curious myself  Wink/being sarcastic

On the photo loaded up above in reply 12, the probes are in the following order top to bottom on the right side of the aircraft:

  1. Right angle of attack sensor vane

  2. First officers pitot static probe

  3. Auxiliary pitot static probe

  4. Total air temperature probe

AV757 is dead right, they are static "tubes" the pitot sticks out and faces the front of the aircraft, you cant measure wind speed on a plane when the pitot doesnt face the direction that the plane is flying in.

Moolies - close, but not quite...

Andz was referring to numbers one and four from AV757's list, so not the pitots but the sensor vane and the temperature probe.
