New Airport In Playa Del Carmen?

Sun May 16, 2004 4:27 am

While discussing CUN in a separate thread, several comments were made with reference to the possibility of a new airport in Playa del Carmen. I know for sure this project is being looked at by several groups of investors, and has even been mentioned in the official state government discourse:

Someone mentioned that this new airport (and the contents of the above-linked article seem to confirm it) favors the risk of turning the Mayan Riviera into something similar to Southeastern Florida. Interesting thought... and scary. If it develops that much, I don't think they will end up looking remotely alike... Just look at the other Cancun... Not a slum, but most certainly not nice, and far away from most neighbourhoods of the SE Floridian coast...

On that thread, some fellow members expressed building this new airport is a bad idea (controversy!! Yesss!!). Therefore there is room for discussion... Is there anyone who has more information or opinions to share with this community?

The Mayan Riviera gets enough development from having CUN and CZM so nearby. I don't really see the need for another airport. I'm not sure if the US airlines would be jumping on this place either. I think airlines would rather fly larger aircraft (with more frequency) to CUN and CZM. CZM is getting more traffic now, some of it is surely for the Mayan Riviera.

I think CO would go in there once it has opened.
Nice alternative for travellers who want to go to the beautyful Riviera Maya.

As the so-called "Mayan Riviera" has developed into a significant destination of itself (and so quickly!), and shows no sign of stopping its growth, the logic for developing another airport is compelling.

To do so would (1) reduce the amount of immediate expansion required at CUN, and (2) dramatically reduce congestion on the highways between the two areas.

As for who'd serve it, my guess is that charter operators would fill up planes from the day it opened. I know that I have been tempted to book a trip to the newly-developed area, but have been dissuaded from doing so because of the lengthy bus riade from / to CUN.

Doesn't CO already fly to Playa Del Carmen with an ERJ? I believe they started service there within the past six months.

Cory, Playa del Carmen (a resort area south of Cancun on the Caribbean shore in the state of Quintana Roo) must not be confused with Ciudad del Carmen, an major oil center on the Gulf coast in the state of Campeche.
Upcoming AM MEX-LAX 73H, VA LAX-MEL 77W.
