America West? What Does The Future Hold For Them?

Tue May 18, 2004 8:09 am

I was chatting with a friend online yesterday from PHX and America West came up. I admit I don't know much about the airline, but I think they are one of the profit making airlines. Are they isolated from the recent upheavals in the industry because of their location and market (PHX)? Also, my friend said they are developing LAS as their new hub. Is that true? And what do you see as the future of America West?

What are your thoughts?

cheers

America West is doing well in my view. They seem to be doing quite well, and yes they are turning a profit.
LAS is already a hub for HP, their second largest (actually only their second hub). However, HP will be expanding into LAX, more than the have already with the LAX-JFK and LAX-BOS service. I belive most of it will be express, though. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

It'd be nice to see them go trans-Atlantic, or even transpacific again! Hope they will increase the range of their flights to different continents. Even if they don't, they still have my support!  Smile

I don't see transpacific anywhere in the near future, their current A/C dont have the range, except maybe a 757 to HNL, but I'm not sure of the range with HP's configuration. Also, I'm sure this has been brought up already, but HP starts seasonal (I believe) service to ANC june 1.

If America West were to go to another continent in the near future it would most likely be South America. I dont see them going to Hawaii anytime soon because the codeshare with Hawaiian. They indeed have made money. I heard the bookings for the new lax flights were good. I would look for them starting more coast to coast and PHX/LAS-cities in the midwest or southeast that they dont serve.

America West's daily PHX-ANC flight is year round.....

Actually, it isn't. The service has been seasonal, with the first flight starting June 1st this year. It may continue year round from now, but I wouldn't count on it.

No, it is year-round:

New Anchorage service

America West will initiate the only daily, nonstop year-round service between Phoenix and Anchorage, Alaska on June 1, 2004. The service is part of America West’s 2004 growth plan to meet increased customer demand for the airline’s extremely successful business-friendly fare structure and outstanding service.
