TWA In HNL Back In The 1980's

Tue May 18, 2004 12:16 pm

Back in the 80's I used to see several TWAs at the Honolulu International Airport at once. Though I was into airplanes spotting since then, I never knew what routes did TWA flew to and from HNL. By the way, most of the TWAs were 747s.

So, if anyone knows or remember those routes, please post them (not just the 80's, any year).

TWA flights #1/2 operated STL-HNL-STL with the 747-100.

They also flew LAX-HNL with the L1011 for a long time.

A map in a TWA timetable (dated June 1, 1973) shows two routes to HNL - one to/from Los Angeles and one to/from Guam.

Another timetable (dated January 1, 1987) indicates that there were two routes to HNL - one to/from Los Angeles and one to/from St. Louis.

I know I didn't provide much, but I hope it helps  Big grin

The LAX-HNL flight, much like Pan Am's at the time, originated in JFK usually. The L1011 was the most common equipment used, but the 747 did operate that route from time to time.

STL-HNL was a 747 route until TWA got rid of those classic birds. It then flew with the 763 (sometimes 752 if you can believe it) until AA swallowed them up.

STL-HNL on a 752?!?! I doubt thats possible. I can see it maybe being possible on the HNL-STL leg but there is no way that they were putting that in with the risk of strong head winds.

Nycfuturepilot, you're right, the 752 flew HNL-STL nonstop, not the other way around. It made a stop in LAX I believe on the flight to HNL.

I remember seeing that there ws a flight from JFK to HNL with stop either in LAX or STL. I think LAX, it makes sence but STL sticks ou tin my mind. I also think I remember service to OGG, do I remember correct? Was there more that just service to HNL as far as Hawaii Service for TWA?

Towards the end, TWA was doing KOA-LAX-STL with the 757.

Even after TW was absorbed by AA, a TW painted B763 would come into HNL (same time as the old TW flight). I think it was from STL. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, during the transition period, TWA Airlines, LLC continued to operate the 767-300 flight from STL.

Yes, you're right. During the summer, they would often use the 767 (I don't know if it was a 200 or 300.) AA eventually took this route. AA now serves this with a 752 or 763. I miss seeing those old TW birds!

Back in the 80s and 90s TW's service @ HNL arrived in the late afternoon or early evening, and departed as red-eyes. TW also used 762ERs on the STL route.

In the 90s, TW did use 741s on the LAX route as well as L1011s. I should know, one of my cousins flew a 741 back home to LA.

The last TW flight I took was in 1975, from LAX to HNL in a 703. I had an opportunity to go to LAX on a super-cheap fare in the 90s right before the LAX route was stopped, but did not have the time to take advantage of it.

Such a shame to see TW gone, as well as the STL flight.

Wow, this takes me back. I remember working ramp in college at COU (Columbia, MO), I'd see TWA 1 fly over every day at the same time. I want to say it was in the AM. Not sure why it stood out, but I always seemed to be on the ramp around the same time when it would go overhead.

Sorry guys just a little off topic.

I was a TWA Service Manager based in STL and flew the STL HNL STL routes on the 747. The flights ran full and the passengers were delightful. Mostly midwesterners who felt so very priviledged to get to fly a NONSTOP to that majical part of the world. A very wonderful memory. A sad memory all mixed up in one!

I remember seeing the B741s! I remember when I was out at HNL's lagoon drive one evening before sunset, and watched this new colored B741 taxi RB for 08R departure. If only I had a camera.  Sad

After TW was absorbed by AA, they continued to have a B763 in the old red cheatline colors, and even have a photo if it in HNL.

TWA's STL-HNL route lasted until AA cut it November 1st, 2003. The route was operated by an AA B763ER daily. Yeah, Je89_w, that was in the days when TWA 747s flew STL-HNL. Boy, those memories of when those gigantic jets came to STL daily  Love  Crying

I also recall seeing TWA 767-300ER's in OGG alongside AA 767s as recently as late 2002, operating the STL-OGG flight I'd imagine.

I go back even further than you guys. Before the 747 and 757 and 767, there was the 707. TW had two 707-331B's that circled the globe in opposite directions every day. Both originated in JFK. One went east and one went west. I believe they were Flight # 1 ( westbound) and Flight # 2 ( eastbound). HNL was a scheduled stop for both flights.

There was a short period of time, I'm thinking 93 or 94 that TWA flew twice a day (on certain days) STL-HNL.

I believe, in 1982-83 timeframe, TWA didn't fly into Hawaii at all. At least, that's what the timetable indicated.

Jmc1975

I'm not sure about those years. I started spotting on 87. And to be honest I always flew CO and UA. But thank you for the information.

If I'm not mistaken, they used to fly a 707 STL-HNL during the 70's (I think).
