Spirit Airlines To Start Airbus Service Nov 18

Tue May 18, 2004 10:39 pm

This can be tied into the "Is Spirit Airlines Good" thread....

http://www.freep.com/money/business/spirit18e_20040518.htm

Beginning Nov. 18, Spirit plans to start flying four Airbus A321's from Detroit, Atlantic City, New York and Ft. Lauderdale. Spirit had previously planned on starting Airbus service in the first quarter of 2005.

Is Sprit competing head to head against Northwest out of DTW? Can anyone? It would be great to see JetBlue, Song or Ted at DTW, but it won't happen. NW doesn't need a low-cost carrier.

Maybe when the new Smith Terminal gets done the LCCs will come in??? (although that will probably be a LONG time away---have they even started that project yet?)

Is Sprit competing head to head against Northwest out of DTW?

Yes they are, although NW often "ignores" their (and other LCC, such as WN and HP) fares. NK has been able to establish itself and and continues to grow -- in fact, on peak departure days this fall they'll offer more seats to LAS than NW, despite NW's tour product & hub. Meanwhile, WN continues to shrink.

Can anyone?

NW's O/D market share at DTW is about 50% -- probably much less than what you'd expect from an airline that (alongside its Airlink affiliates) often controls more than 80% of the traffic...

Airlines such as AA, UA and DL have always had and will continue to have a large portion of the O/D business traffic at DTW.

I doubt the LCC will ever come in masses. NW isn't the problem -- the problem is Detroit's dinosaur business community has shown a willingness to pay a premium to fly on the legacy carriers... and because of the sheer size of the largest corporate accounts, they've been getting damn good pricing lately, too.

IP said it right, DTW is an interesting market and all of the large businesses have huge corporate accounts. Part of the reason NW doesn't have such a huge O&D percentage carries over from their NORTHWORST days back at the Davey dump when AA, UA, and DL got a large number of corporate accounts. NW is now taking some of those back.

We will probably never see LCC's on a large scale simply because for the most part, DTW is pretty well covered from Spirit and WN. Spirit covers the Florida destinations and other low-yielders like LAS and ACY. And then WN just kind of does its thing here with opportunies to connect on out through MDW.

No we won't ever see TED or Song here. JetBlue is eyeing up FNT before DTW. The new Davey terminal will basically be a upgraded replacement, not a large expansion. Plus Spirit will be focusing most of its expansion out of FLL with the new aircraft, not primarily DTW.

One question I have, is that can NK get Airbus operations ramped up by Nov. First of all this is a totally new fleet type, COMPLETELY different in every aspect from the MD-80s. How will they have crews trained in time, and maintainance lined up, let alone have the aircraft? Are they going to be wet-leased at first?

I wonder what JetBlue plans on doing with its LGA slots. I heard it is going to fly mostly to Florida with these slots until it gets its terminal completed at JFK. If jetBlue does go to Florida this is really going to hurt Spirit at LGA. Any thoughts?

B6 would have minimal impact on NK. From LGA, NK serves DTW, FLL, MYR and MCO. NK's main operations (which it plans to continue to build upon) are in DTW and FLL. JetBlue likely wouldn't waste precious LGA slots flying to Mytle Beach! The same could be said of MCO, but if B6 operated it... hey, NK's held its own against several legacy airlines so why bot B6? NK will have DirecTV and a Premium cabin....

I was just over at Airbus.com and in the article about all the new A320 family operators in 2004 there is a mention that Spirit will start A321 service in September, 2004. If that's the case, we will be seeing Spirit Airbuses sooner than November!

cheers, Ralph

on local news here, they said November...I like the idea...I'd be willing to try Spirit on A321s, they are (to many FLL locals) a joke right now and their name is not out there (Hint to NK: advertising at hockey games is nice for hockey fans, but it doesn't help down here!)

Maybe it means that Spirit will take delivery of the first Airbii in September. Once final preparations are made, and such, it probably would be November by the time the plane enters service.

Its interesting that Spirit can get its hands on A321s so quickly - I read that there are a couple of white tail A321s sitting around with Airbus, ordered by airlines that could not afford to accept delivery of the aircraft, I wonder if Spirit arranged to take these aircraft or if the A321s that are arriving early are a result of the leasing company changing a few aircraft allocations. If the September date is true, that is a about a 6 month order-to-delivery time frame which is exceptional for the A32X (or 737NG) aircraft which have huge backlogs.

I love hearing about my airline. It truly warms my heart! I have mentioned this once before, and I'll do it again. Northwest could care less if we're at DTW. The reason IS.......we stop the monopoly concerns! We have many departures to many different places which are really no hit to their books what so ever. We also fly many of their pilots to home in back. So in the great scheme of things we pose no threat to anyone. As far as my airline being a "joke", I consistantly receive requests for info on any mileage program. This means while we may be a joke to you we are "not" a joke to many people. I fly the LAX route from FLL on a weekly basis. I can think of about twenty regulars who fly this route in Spirit Plus. I will being seeing two of them tomorrow night.
Now about the airbusses. The reason we can so quickly get this plane on line is Airbus training facilities are so close to company headquarters. Our cabin trainers, mechanics, pilots have already started training. Airbus is very efficient at disseminating info. Plus my company is working day (some nights too.) in getting all the training taken care of. Knowing a few of the people who make things happen at Spirit, they are well capable of getting the job done while crossing every T and dotting every I.
Now let's talk cool....A321's. I guess there is maybe some joke in this. These planes are going to look real good with their new paint job. We may also finally be able to address some overbooking problems in the past. Did I mention are prices might even be able to drop if gas costs are shared with more people on the plane. The joke is we'll have new paint, new planes, fresh new faces in the cabin (we've been waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel), new routes, new financial backing, new heart, new focus, and best of all, the same dedication that has kept Spirit flying through the worst and the best. Jokes on you buddy!
