U2/CWL News

Hey,

Well I know that rumors without sources aren't that reliable but I thought this one would go down quite well with A.netters!

At the moment I'm on work experience at Cardiff Airport http://www.cial.co.uk with ground handling agent - Aviance - http://www.aviancehandling.com... Whilst helping to deboard KL F100 from AMS this morning (which to note had 12 people's bag's missing - AMS ground handling fault + short connecting times = lots of lost bags) the two handling agents started to talk to me about U2 and the fact that last summer they were looking at starting flights from CWL... last summer WW were looking at pulling out.. and from the looks of things could be pulling out in the next 6 months...they said that U2 were looking at the prospect of making CWL a hub and adding routes from there, could this happen?

Is there any truth in this?

So, what I want to know is could it really happen?

I for one would really like to see U2 at CWL!

Regards,

CM

I don't think baby will be pulling out of CWL, and I would be VERY surprised to see EZY starting up at CWL with their BRS base so nearby. More likely someone like Ryanair or Jet2 would take over at CWL I would imagine.

But again, I really can't see WW pulling the plug on their CWL base.

Here are some of the load factors of BMIbaby's flights yesterday that I can remember.. give or take one or two passengers..

CWL-AGP.. 149/149
CWL-ALC.. 129/149
CWL-CDG.. 71/149
CWL-PRG.. 135/149
CWL-EDI.. 65/149
CWL-BFS 62/149

That's not all of the flights but does that show how bad/good they are doing?

Are they about right? Are they making money on these routes then?

I am very sure that what the agents were saying was correct.. I know that BRS is just down the road, but look at London - LGW, STN, LTN.. EMA not too far away..

I know that the southwest has a smaller poplulation than London, but it is still fairly large.

The problem with WW @ CWL is that they don't want to invest in routes... unlike U2 that I think would!

Not sure about U2 entering CWL. CWL are looking to do some more deals with new operators and U2 are going to have to find new routes for all these aircraft on order. What you may find is Baby dropping some of it's routes that do not commercially suit it's aircraft or doing more outsourcing of routes as it currently does with Air Wales on Cork and Glasgow.
There is no right or wrong only opinion

I agree with you there..

I believe that Baby will do more outsourcing with Air Wales on it's UK and Ireland routes... and maybe try to help Air Wales re-open routes by using WW to advertise them and book them on they're website as well as Air Wales, for example - CWL-BRU - operated by Air Wales but with help from Baby..

What routes can you see opening up from CWL?

I think a joint 6G/WW BRU route is out of the question. NEMA, which has a much larger BRU market could not sustain a WW service, and WW know BRU is not a leisure route, they would be unwilling to invest in such a service.

CWL will always live in the shadow of BRS, all this talk of CWL getting CO service etc is untrue, BRS is far more likely to gain a CO EWR service.

And if I remember correctly, someone said last year that this year CWL would have AA and UA transatlatic flights.......

Hmmmm, work EXPERIENCE sounds about right.

Nope, EZY wont go to CWL...but I'd expect a WW expansion  Big grin
As for the EWR service, much more likely to go to BRS.

Your propably right Gkirk but CWL are doing alot to try and attract new airlines along with the WDA (Welsh Development Agency) and they have a decent size runway to their advantage. Apparently they are expected to announce some new airlines and routes in the near future - I am all ears.

Either way, if any airline is to set up a hub at Cardiff, you can pretty much rule out Easyjet as Bristol is just too nearby.

To be honest I thought that U2 wouldn't set up shop at CWL but I was just passing on some information that I came across..

As for the AA and UA member.. well that wasn't me.. I can't remember his username but he hasn't posted on here for a while!

CO for a fact are looking at CWL and BRS to operate a 752 but both airports are about equal when it comes down to it...

CWL has a rather large market for tourism and business from the US... with many North American companies having links with Wales and the Southwest + a lot of tourism to and from the US!

Personally a 752 service from BRS - EWR would be fairly stupid seeing as BRS runway is only 6598ft... compared to CWL's 7723ft.. that means no restrictions on a flight from CWL to EWR but many restrictions on a flight from BRS!

BTW, on the tarmac today I saw some American business men with CONTINENTAL on they're laptop cases...with the director of Cardiff Airport.. could well be talking about a CO service from CWL!

What routes are these that may well be launched?

What airlines are contemplating setting up a hub at CWL?

An article I found regarding the new TravelCity Direct 747 flights from Cardiff also included the following quote

"...airport managing director Jon Horne said there was the possibility of other big announcements about new services being made in the coming weeks.

When the rail link to the airport is established, he hopes to draw in passengers who would never previously have considered flying from Cardiff. He envisages people travelling from Paddington and Swindon to make transatlantic journeys."

Full article courtesy of IC Wales:

It maybe wishful thinking, but its about time Cardiff turned all this hype into reality.

Now time for some sleep,
