Interesting Article About AirTran Vs. Delta In ATL

Wed May 19, 2004 5:49 am

The cover story of this week's Atlanta Business Chronicle is "AirTran Chips Away at Delta; Discount airline now has 13 percent of ATL market"

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2004/05/17/story1.html

Key points:

* Contrary to what people might think, AirTran's largest route from ATL (in terms of pax) is NOT to a Florida (as in leisure) market but rather to New York-LaGuardia, followed by Chicago-Midway and then Orlando. (According to BTS data.)

* ATL-LGA is also Delta's busiest route, followed by Boston and LA.

* AirTran has one of the industry's lowest cost per available seat mile (CASM) -- 8.26 cents. Delta's CASM is 10.38 and only USAirways is higher, according to the article.

(Note, I did a search and did not see this thread topic posted.)

Article didn't really state anything that wasn't obvious. One thing that they failed to mention was that in recent years DL and FL's market shares have both remained the same, with both carriers increasing their number of passengers carried from ATL.
