Star Alliance Replacement? What If?

Wed May 19, 2004 10:22 am

Okay, here's the disclaimer...

I sincerely believe United Airlines is going to survive, and I really hope they do so please do not misconstrue this as another United doomsday thread or think me a United hater...this just crossed my mind and made me wonder...

Okay, let's say...HYPOTHETICALLY...United went under...

Now pretend your the head of the Star Alliance, which airline CEO do you call first? The loss of United would leave a gaping hole in the Star Alliance and with all due respect, I do not think US Airways has the necessary network strength to be the sole US member...

Just a question for all the armchair airline execs out there...

Remember, NW, CO, DL, and AA are already taken...

Just a thought...

If I'm the head of the Star Alliance, I would be much more worried about losing Air Canada and US Airways at this point.

Still, with those two in serious trouble, I'd certainly be thinking of a backup. Frankly, I don't think you can quickly replace an airline the size of Air Canada or even United. It would definitely leave a hole in your alliance, and it would most likely cause the collapse of that alliance before a replacement airline could fill the void(s).

I guess I would try to lure NW or CO out of their alliance, that would be the best hope, but doubtful at best.

US and AC are in more trouble, IMO. If US bit the dust, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. They went how long without them? As far as AC, I guess you would just have to go without a carrier in Canada until a new airline becomes the flagship.

The way CO and NW seem to operate so closely together it seems unlikely that you would be able to lure just one of them out. BUT...if you could get one, you may be able to get both, and with NWs strength in the Pacific that could be a dynamite catch. But it'd be highly unlikely.
