Why No UPS 747s In New Colors?

Thu May 20, 2004 3:45 am

Hello All,

I was curious as to why UPS has not painted any of their 747s in to the new colors yet? Many of the much older aircraft such as DC-8s and 721s (which I'm sure have many more hours on the clock) have been repainted. As UPS operates so many 747s on their long haul high capacity cargo flights, I would find it hard to believe that they would be retiring the type. With all the relatively newer classics parked in the desert these days, it seems as if it would be easy for UPS to pick up some new aircraft with less cycles on them at bargain prices if that were the issue. I would appreciate it if anyone could fill me in on the subject.

Thanks,
Trent

The 747s are being slowly phased out in favor of the MD-11. Current fleet plans show a new long range freighter in service by 2009. Boeing and Airbus officials were in Louisville recently to discuss future aquisitions with UPS, Boeing is offering four models, the 747-400F, 747-400SF, 777-300F and a new effecient 747-400F with 7E7 engines and other mods. Airbus is offering the A380 and a A340-600F varient.

UPS has no plans to repaint any of the existing 747s in the new paint scheme.

N528UP is now at HAECO in Hong Kong without titles or markings. N525UP is stored and so are a few others.

UPS is following FedEx's steps by the book Smokin cool. FedEx replaced with MD-11's the B74's acquired when Flying Tigers was merged, back in the 80's.

In more recent times, Both Boeing and Airbus courted FX for the decision on the supercarrier; the winner was Airbus, when FedEx placed firm order for 8 A-380-800F aircraft (330,000Lb payload), with options for 12 more. FedEx thus became both the A380's cargo version launch customer and the first American airline to order, second only to Emirates (passenger version launch customer).

It will be interesting to see what UPS decides to acquire now.
