Saudi Arabian Airlines : What Can I Expect?

Thu May 20, 2004 6:05 am

Hi guys, probably I'll have an holiday in Paris (from Rome)and searching on the web I've found the lowest price (based on a full service carrier) with SV! (125 eur+tax a/r..... Less than AF or AZ prices).Flights are twice weekly with 777!!!
So I'm very curious: How is SV? Which your experience? As for you, do they offer also a catering service on this short route?
Please someone tell me something about this company!
Thanks a lot

Make certain to observe and respect their customs. If you are flying during Ramadan meal service may be not what you expect. If you are a believer even though not an Arab you will be asked to wear traditional clothing as the plane enters Saudi airspace. Western women should not expect to be treated as equal and should wear at least a head scarf. You should not wear Christian or Jewish jewelry.

The service is extremly spartan-much like TWA at the end.

Canning = to be placed in can and sealed, like vegetables, sodas, soup
Caning = to be hit or struck by a cane

I used SV regularly in the past to visit my dad in the Gulf. Their 777's are really great and the seats are really wide and comfy with lots of legroom. If I remember correctly they only give out drinks and a small sandwich on the short hop from CDG-FCO.

There are a few things you will find very intersting about flying with them, watch a film on the IFE and see how they cut out violent women from films or pixel parts of them out. I mean try watching "Crouching tiger, hidden dragon" it made no sense at all, what I could see of it. And there are no music videos as that's forbidden.

The male FA's don't do anything at all unless there is a manager from HQ upfront and the female FA's look really miserable all the time.

There is no booze whatsoever (hence I eventually changed to BA, LX and AF).

You'll love the prayer room at the back. Since a lot of them pray on the flt the toilets get a bit flooded as they have to wash their feet and hands in a small space.

You will really enjoy the experience as to my mind it really is the most unusual airline. It's the worst and the best all rolled into one.

Give us your thoughts on it on your return. Enjoy!!!

and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

'western women should wear at least a head scarf'

Absolute tosh! there is need to cover anything but your legs on an SV flight.

Thanks guys for all your answers!! So from what I hear SV probably is the most "islamic" airlines around the world! I'm not muslim but I want to respect all their customs...at the same time I wish they don't oblige me doing something of particular! If it were so , I couldn't say that SV is the most democratic airline!

X Pearson....I 've find this trip on an italian site ( www.eviaggi.com);I don't know exactly but if you don't find this price in UK maybe it should be so because this fare can be sold only in Italy; are you interested about a CDG/FCO on SV?

Lxsaab2000, I have flown with them so many times and they offer great service and onboard comfort. They also have PTVs. I wouldn't worry at all about the rumors some other members are coming up with. You can be any religion/race/colour and you will not be hassled at all. Hope you have a good flight and holiday.

Western women should not expect to be treated as equal

What is wrong with you, where did you come up with this rubbish? I can assure anyone whether you're man or woman you will be treated equally and with a lot of respect.
Ultrapig, just because you watch movies that portray Saudis as women oppressors its not true, especially on their international airline.

Here here!

I agree totally!

I lived in the Gulf for 10 years, and found some of the locals to be the most welcoming, friendly people I have ever met, regardless of sex.

I am not denying that some muslim countries do things differently to countries in the 'Western world', but that does not mean it is wrong!

Some of the blame for this distorted view can go to the overdramatised, Western tabloid press!

I would like to add, that I would MUCH prefer to fly SV than the likes of KLM, Air France, maybe even BA to get to Saudi, THEY are Western airlines, but they know jack s**t about somethings, especially seat space!

I flew FCO-CDG on SV 777 in Jan99 and had a great flight; flight wasn't crowded at all and service was great. The flight leave FCO very early so the lack of alcohol shouldn't be a problem for most people...Great legroom with footrest even in Y. Meal service was a nice breakfeast. Enjoy your flight and ignore ingorent comments.

Thanks to everyone!

This morning I was in SV office in Milan and they confirm what I saw on internet ; so it really exists this special fare!! (125 euro + taxes , as I said yesterday)
the trip's details:
FCO/CDG (28 May) SV 155 7:50--->9:50 in Y class
CDG/FCO (1 Jun) SV 162 11:45--->13:45 in Y class
But I haven't booked it yet because firstly I have to convince my friends to fly with an arab carrier!
I wish to carry out this trip with SV!

Does someone has any photos of SV 777 cabin (interior view)? on a.net there are photos only for th 747.

X Horus, I don't think it's true but someone in Italy told me that during particular periods on SV aircrafts there is place in the back where having "islamic prayers"....and that someone should pull out some carpets for this purpose!
Can you confirm this?
I think who told me so he was only joking!

Bye

The prayer room is a curtained off room at the back. The pax have their own prayer mats with them.

It doesn't interfere with the flt whatsoever because if you didn't look behind the curtain you wouldn't know what was behind it. I first thought it was a place to put patients on stretchers.

In Ramadan all pax can eat at any time (according to the Koran) but the Muslim pax prefer to observe the fast and eat their meals later after sundown. Being a muslim or non muslim will not affect your flt at all, especially as you are flying within Europe.

The saudis are a bit nervous of photography and so I doubt you'll find any photos of the cabin interior. I have photos of the wing over various landmarks and a pile of in flight magazines.

and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

That's because they aren't an arm of the state. Once, if ever, Saudi has to compete and not lose money, that will go away.

Enjoy your flight ...

Huyfan, their international flights are profitable (especially during the Hajj period). Their most profitable market is to Egypt.

On the domestic side, the story is different as many of the routes are run for the government and for the benefit of local businesses, and as a result many routes do not attract high yields so they operate at a loss.

Horus:

Ok I apologize Saudi women are treated as equal to men-

They are allowed to drive cars
They can go out in public without he air covering
They can leave the country without their husband's position

Right? Wrong?

Its a different society-a tribal islamic society different that what we have it the west-Like I said we should respect their customs-> When i was in Eguypt (an treat extremly well) I respected Islamic customs-but they are different and like in most fundamental religions -Evangelic Christian stirct Catholic and orthodox Je udians all of which have long histories Women have rights but different rights from men.

That being said Saud Airliens give very poor service-I'd rather fly Egypt Air any day.

Ultrapig, without deviating from the thread too much. Yes the points you said are true, but that is more due to cultural traditions rather than religious obligations. Besides why do people always highlight the bad parts in a country. Just this week in the UK, statistics showed that 2 women die a week due to domestic violence (i.e. killed by their husbands). In the US on average 6 women get raped every minute. My point is there are problems with every society.

p.s Hope you had a good time in Egypt

Agreed cultures are different that's why I like to travel and Egypt was great-freindly people great sights excellent guides-same in Jordon-I'm looking forward to going to Syria when the climate changes-Toruism is a great force for peace-people learn abvout each other leave their money in a fr oregin country and take their troubles home.

PS I have my typical tourist picture riding a camel by the Pyraminds-right here

Theyre just like any other airline.

But they serve no alcohol on board. Which is a bore on a long flight.

Female FAs are either Indian, British, Lebanese - for most of the part.

The crew treat everyone equally. The rules that apply in Saudi society do not apply inflight for most of the part.

Lxsaab2000,

Saudia has today introduced the first "internet-on board" on one of its 747-400.
I hope you will be lucky enough to try it.
I didn't say it would be easy. I just said it would be the truth
