Who Are Viking Air?

Thu May 20, 2004 8:29 am

A new airline has started serving CAI from Hereklion, Crete called Viking (not sure if it is Air/Airways/Airline,etc). They have a twice weekly flights on the route VIK6240.

Anyway I did a search on the A.net database but found no pictures. Can anyone help with any info?

Thanks

Thanks, but those aircraft have Swedish registrations? Is this a Greek or Swedish airline?

Horus,

A couple photos showed that the airline was flying some flights for Olympic Airways. You are right, they are Swedish registrations. Some airlines do register their planes elsewhere based on insurance or leasing agreements or simply because it is cheaper or easier to register.

Then again, it may very well be a Swedish airline. But my point is it COULD be a Greek airline despite the Swedish registrations.

Horus,

It appears that the airline is Swedish. Afterall, the name does give it away. Why would a Greek airline be named Viking Airlines?  Big grin

They seem to be a charter airline. Considering also that the flight number is 4 digits, that's another indication that they are probably a charter.

Are you sure this service from Heraklion is not a charter? Because it sounds like it. If so, then there is nothing unusual about a Swedish airline operating the route.

The airline is Sweedish. Its aircrafts are leased by Olympic to assist the company with its heavy summer schedule because of the unavailability of other aircrafts such as the 717s A 300s and A 340s.
ps. Not all its aircrafts are leased I think that Olympic uses one or two of them.
I remember one MD 83 parked at El. Venizelos surely though.

A small snippet from their VERY minimalistic website:

Viking Airlines started operations on 10 May 2003.

McDonnel Douglas MD-83, with 161 economy seats are used for charter operations throughout Europe.

Two of this type are based in Heraklion, Greece operating charter flights on behalf of a number of Tour Operators destinations throughout Europe.

Also available for Ad Hoc Charter. Contact us at info@vikingairlines.com for more information.

Thanks BA and SXFAN

BA, indeed it is a new charter service.

SXFAN, so they're Olympic Airways charters?

They probably replace the 717s of Olympic. As I remember the former Olympic Aviation that used to be the owner of the 717s used to make charter flights on behalf of tour opereitors and OA.
There was a similar situation not very long time ago with a Maersk's 737 700 I think.

Aren't the 717s only a few years old? Why are they getting rid of them?

The 717s of Olympic are a very complicated issue. 2 of them are flying now but they didn't do so since last December. They created a problem to the route network and "foreign aid" was used to cover the gap.
Curently two out of the three 717s of Olympic are flying. With one remaining still grounded tanning under the Athens sun. An other reason for the use of VIKING'S MD 82 is that because the A 300s are flying routes that the 340s used to fly and the 734s that replace the A 300s in routes souch as Paris and London are not enough.

Just one more question, if Olympic are leasing the aircraft why is the flight code VIK rather than OA?

I think neither Maersk's flights had Olympic's codes. But I have to admit I am not sure for that. If you find out anything new let us know please.
