Has Anyone Flew EA?

I heard that EA used to be a great airline. Do they still have flights? Where do they go? EA is the best!

EA lives up to their motto "America's Favorite Way To Fly." They operate an older fleet consisting of DC-9, B727, B757, A300 and L1011 aircraft throughout the USA, Carribean and elsewhere from their hubs at ATL and MIA.

Recently I flew EA to LAX. The DTW-ATL flight was operated with a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30. It's an older aircraft, but it was clean and comfortable.

The ATL-LAX flight utilized an L1011. This is also an older, well-maintained aircraft and among the last TriStars operating within the USA.

For the inbound, I flew a B757 LAX-ATL and then B727 ATL-DTW.

I flew them between my then-home airport MOB and ATL in the '70's, and then again from MOB thru ATL to TPA in the early '80's. On the latter trip, we barely made the connecting flight, and Economy was full, so the bumped us up to First Class from ATL to TPA. That was Great!
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

I last flew EA when I was 6... way back in 1971-72. It was my first flight. My family was visiting my grandparents (who were in Florida at the time) during Christmas break.

From what I remember, the way down, both flights (BOS-LGA, EWR-DAB, cab ride between LGA and EWR, not sure why) were on DC-9s; the return trip, DAB-ATL-BOS (both legs) were on 727s.

Quantasflyer, or should I say Qantasflyer; Eastern shut down back in 1991.

LOL, Industrialpate.

I flew Eastern a fair amount in the 80s back and forth from Houston to Pittsburgh when I was in college. They were good, sometimes great in terms of service. I remember one flight from CLE to IAH where I got served Steak & Shrimp for dinner in coach.

It's unfortunate they suffered an inglorious end in the early 90s. Too many shifts in strategy and finally being pillaged by Lorenzo. I've always been a little surprised that the name was never resurrected. With Frontier, National, Braniff (x2), and Ozark all finding new homes, it seems strange that Eastern never did.

Cheers,

I flew on Eastern Airlines! Gold OnePass member ...

Eastern Airlines planes were nice and classic - my favorite: DC-9-51s (galleries up front and in the back). Atlanta was a perfect hub for Eastern.

I had the pleasure of flying on Eastern DC-10 to Buenos Aires via Rio de Janeiro from Miami and back...

In 1990 Eastern revamped first class section and changed uniform image of its employees... Late Marty Shugrue tried his best to save Eastern.

America West still operates ex-Eastern 757s...

Do you mean EA as in Eastern Airlines or do you mean EA as in European Air Express?? todays EA code is for European Air Express, the old EA was for Eastern. But to answer your question yes I did fly on Eastern, but I have not flown European Air Express

True and not true when you think about it. Good ol' frankie back in the day own a number of airlines including continental and Eastern. After Eastern shut down, there was continental, but under different ownership. So, what they absorbed from Eastern especially is the OnePass program! That is something that remains at CO from EA. Plus CO still has hubs at EWR, IAH, and CLE which were all airports served by Eastern (EWR and IAH being large bases.) I kinda think of it at today's Eastern, but AirTran as well.

Back in the day, EA was my family's choice airline since we use to fly frequently between MIA and JFK or LGA. I loved EA, especially their L1011's, what a classy aeroplane! Thanks to EA, I also got my chance to fly on an A300 early on shortly after they received them from Airbus. The 757's were pretty cool too, with the 757 logo on the tails, that was nice! What a sad day it was to see EA dissappear!

It seems that EA flew more widebodies than most other carriers. How many flew the A300, the DC-10, the L1011, and the 747?!

I have fond memories of Eastern Airlines - My very first flight at the age of 11 was on a 727-200 from RDU to Atlanta and a DC9 variation to El Paso - I was thrilled and haven't lost any of that. Even though I fly on a regard basis - I still get those tinges of excitement as the takeoff roll begins. Eastern Airline was the best.

I had the chance to fly Eastern several times in the 1980's and early 1990s

From New York/JFK To Miami, St. Thomas, San Juan on Airbus 300 and L-1011. Also a few 727 flights.

Two I particularly remember:

I was working in Public Relations in Denver and was invited by Eastern to fly to Atlanta for the opening of the new Hartsfield International Airport

The other flight was on an A300 from New York To Miami when Eastern and National Airlines were battling it out over the NY - Florida market. Both airlines were showing movies with free popcorn (what a mess in the cabin). The flights between JFK and Miami were less than three hours so they started the movie as soon as we pulled away from the gate !! (they did do the safety briefing first, though) It was hard on those people sitting at the window who wanted to look out and watch the takeoff The F/As asked that everyone put their window shades down!!

I have always wondered why Eastern has not been resusciated as a name--is there a possibility that the name is still owned by someone (like Continental?)

Though I believe that, even if a tradename like that is owned, if its not used for a certain amount of time, it is released back into the public domain.

Pretty sure my first look into a cockpit was on an EA flight to EWR-MCO (I think) when I was a kid--must have been 1978-79. The pilot let me and my brother sit in the pilot and co-pilot seats.

I remember it vividly, though I am sorry to say I don't know what kind of plane it was. It was on a family trip to Disney and what I remember most all these years later is looking out the cockpit.

Anybody know what equipment EA flew between EWR-MCO in the late 70s?

I flew them back in 1979 on a red-eye(B72S) from BOS-MIA. The F/A's look like they just returned from an orgy, a mud wrestle or a tequila shooter contest.

Hair all over the place, blouses untucked. The flight was uneventful. No meal in
coach, first got a meal. I miss the whisperliners, which I thought were pantyliners worn by flight attendants!!!

They probably had... Things (and morals) have changed quite a bit since those years... AIDS breakout put a damper on the liberal ways of many people... And back then F/A's were indeed famous for what was then perceived as an extra-liberal style of living (and loving)...

I am an ex-Eastern employee--customer service agent. I was the 1st part-timer that was hired when EA began service in PHX back on Oct 1, 1979. I was fortunate enough to spend 8 yrs with them working on the ramp in PHX and CMH, customer service in PHX, ELP, ATL, and reservations in SLC. I've worked A300, L1011, DC9-30/50, and both 727-100/200 on the ramp and customer service side. The A300 is a sweet aircraft to work as it had the automated container loading system---man that was nice (when it worked properly).

Travelled to many places with Eastern as well---SJU, BGI, SXM, ANU, NAS, just to name a few of the more exotic places. They were a fine company to work at until Frank Lorenzo got hold of it and sold it off piece by piece--including SystemOne (CRS system), and the AirShuttle. I heard at the time of the demise that Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean were next on the chopping block. Last I heard NW is flying some of the old DC9-30's, TWA had some of the -30's as well as most of the -50's, NW retired the last of the EA 727-200's recently (I believe it to be N825EA), and I also heard a rumor that AA had a couple of EA 757's that they didn't take delivery on, as well as CO having the A300 and 757's.

Recently I did see an old EA still flying around....N887Z which is now a cargo bird with Charter America. It was here at RDU just a couple of days ago and seems to be quite a regular visitor here being here about 2 or 3 times a week.

Those were the days.......

I've travelled with Eastern only twice,in March 1976.First a 727 from JFK to Atlanta.I got a middle seat, squeezed in between two humongously fat guys,of the type you only find in the USA,and I couldn't move an inch. There was a gap of some 8 or 9 inches between their arms in front of me,so I had problems with eating a dark bread sandwich that was all that was offered.BTW,the sandwich turned out to be sour.It is the most uncomfortable flight I've ever experienced.
Next flight was in a DC-9-30 from Atlanta to Melbourne,Florida.A lot better! I had a two-seater for myself, and there were also some soft drinks available. But nothing to eat.
Wasn't Kiwi formed by ex-Eastern employees?

So you're saying that Eastern Airlines, technically, is still legally an existing company today as in.....still in business without aircraft operations?? This is pretty interesting.

Kiwi I believe was formed by ex-Eastern employees and based out of EWR or LGA, can't really remember.

I thought all of Eastern's assets (or lack thereof) was settled in bankruptcy court finally years ago. Because I know most of the former employees, who were vested, got their money, albeit portions of pennies on the dollar.

You're right "Airframe" this is getting interesting. What I would give to see the "old blue hockey sticks" in the air again.

I flew on EA from ROC-MCO thru ATL before DL took it over. I remember waiting in MCO for the plane to arrive and hopsing like hell it would be a 757! I didn't get on a 757 until I flew UA ORD-EA / KSEA), USA - Washington">SEA in Nov 2000.
I also remember I believe it was a DC9 with rear facing seats and a card table between the 2 seats up near the front.

I was ticketed to fly EA LGA-MIA the night they shut down. Since I already had my tix and no checked bags, I bypassed the ticket counter although I noticed the lines were longer than usual. As I recall, I was trying to get on an earlier flight standby but couldn't, and as I waited in the boarding lounge I started to overhear people discussing EA's imminent demise which I gather had been on the news. Apparently, if you had paid by credit card, you had until midnight to cash in tickets for full refund which is what I decided to do considering I didn't want to spend a weekend in MIA with a worthless EA ticket begging some other airline to honor it. So I cashed in the ticket and was interviewed by WCBS radio.

I flew on Eastern a lot, first out of SJU when I lived in Puerto Rico from 1960 to 1974 and MIA from then on. They were once great in every way, but by the time they went under in '91 they were but a shadow of their former selves. Late flights, long waits to get your luggage, surly employees, you name it.

A friend of mine worked in Eastern administration the last dozen years or so of it's existence and he said the clash of egos between management and the mechanic's union was the worst. He was not surprised Eastern wound up going under. He now lives in Orlando working for the city and says he will never work for another airline again!

cheers, Ralph

Only one experience on Eastern, MSY to STL via ATL. It was a 727 "WhisperJet" from MSY to ATL, then changed to an L-1011 (my first wide body). I was 18, the first summer out of high school, and I splurged on First Class.

My experience on Eastern was good, although I do not remember much. I do remember being awed at the spaciousness of the L-1011, and I do remember changing planes in Atlanta in the summer of 1979. It was hot and humid, the flight from MSY was late; therefore, I had to hurry to meet my connection. Ran to the gate, and as I was first class, they were waiting for me. This was all at the old terminal buildings, you could see the new Hartsfield terminals under construction. If I remember right, either one or both of those flights used air stairs, not jetways.

Oh how I long for the day when the skies were truly Friendly!
