EDI's Roof Deck - Still There?

Fri May 21, 2004 7:49 am

Does EDI still possess its roof deck or has it been a victim of development or of a 'security risk'? If it's still there, is it any good?

I'm afraid it has fallen victim to increased security and terminal developments. It will never re-open I feel. There is more chance of the Queen's building at LHR re-opening. However, there are excellent vantage points around the perimeter. The best- in my opinion- is easily within walking distance of the terminal building.

Aahhh I see! How typical? About this "excellent" vantage point around the perimeter - how far ON FOOT is it from the terminal? IF I decide to visit EDI, I'll only have just over 6 hours.

About a 5-10 minute walk. I'll have to try and find a map or something.

Booked my flight to and from EDI. Will be there on the 15th Sept. Would appreciate as much info. as possible about the location 5-10 mins by foot from terminal. I DON'T take photos - I only obtain registrations.

Hi James,

Are you flying FR?

If you fly for example BA, you will be able to check-in very early (instead of 2h before departure), go through security and proceed to the terminal. It's a very nice area: you can walk around (you see all aircraft at their gate), and you see all traffic landing/departing. For some reason, there is a nice atmosphere too... and nice traffic (regional carriers like Eastern, Air Wales (Graham Big grin),...)

One of the reasons why I try to avoid low-cost carriers  Big grin You are able to go airside when you want.

This location is perfect for getting regs. I'm still trying to find a decent map of it. What times are you going to be here at? Are you flying BMI or BA and then EI or FR?

Oh, and Frederic, I presume you are referring to EDI, but we don't get Air Wales.  Smile

That's the best I have found so far.

Ingliston is in the background of this picture. The big open space. In fact, there are a few cars parked there.

There is now a new, slightly taller fence there since this pic was taken.

Hi SL,

Thanks a lot for your assistance; I'm very grateful for your effort.

I'll be flying MAN-EDI on BD, arriving 0950, and leaving for DUB at 1625.

Just looked at the map - it seems an awful long way from the airport! Have you walked to the location (where the photo was taken) before? Did it take 5-10 mins? What about directions from the terminal?

Excellent! During those times you will be able to see Transaero and CO, and maybe some other interesting charters, I'll have to check when the TU154s visit.  Smile
I did 'the walk' when Concorde visited, it really does only take 10mins and no more.
Going by the Jetphotos pic, you exit the terminal and turn right and walk down to where the U2 737 is. The road is inbetween the cars and the building just to the right of U2(it's right). You then walk around that factory in a clockwise direction. Roughly where those trees are to the left of it.
Thens it's just straight down and straight ahead.
I'm still trying to find you a decent map, or accurate directions for you.  Smile

Just checked, and don't expect much on the charter front, looks like just Monarch. Flyglobespan also, but then they're not charter.  Smile

That is down where the U2 737 is parked in the Jetphotos pic. You can get right up to the fence, so you are very close to any aircraft parked on stand 1. In fact you can make out someone standing there.
It's only good if there are an internationals in, as that is where they park, so worth a stop off on the way to and from Ingliston to check it out.  Smile

Here's a very simple map:
Basically, head straight out of the terminal and follow the main road until you get to the first round about then turn right(or just follow the signs for the hotel if there are any  Big grin ) The hotel is literally in the grounds of Ingliston.

I did 'the walk'

You can do the walk, I can do the walk. Gees that's a bad song.  Laugh out loud

Thanks very much indeed for your help, SL - you've been a Godsend.  Smile You're DEFINITELY worth putting on my respected list, so I have done so. Thanks a lot.  Laugh out loud

So, if I following your instructions (copy and pasted below), I will reach the place shown in reply 13. From there, how do I get to Islington? Do I walk back to the terminal and then start again?

The pic in reply 13 is just at the very end of the terminal. Turn right as you exit it and just keep walking until the terminal building ends, then there will a right turn you can take directally infront of you. That is where reply 13 is. You can't miss that area, especially if their are any international flights in, just walk towards the planes once you got to the far end of the terminal outside.  Smile It could be on the way to Ingliston, ot you could follow the route on the very simplified map to where the quality hotel is, which involves turning right at the first round-about you come to on the main road, then walking all the way down that road after turning right. Then you will be facing the Highland show centre, or the royal Exhibition Centre, turn right again and the open land at Ingliston will be right infront of you. Now you just have to walk down as far as you like to the fence.
The best thing to do is to look at the Multimap link. It even has directions.
Instead of walking all the way down 'Jubilee Road', turn right on to 'Almond Road' That'll allow you a view like that in reply 13. Then take the next right on to an unnamed road as ahown on multimap. That'll bring you back to 'Fairview Road' and you can follow the instuctions again from Multimap.  Smile

Look at the Multimap URL posted above, you want to get to the area that has the words 'Exhibition Centre'.
If you stand at the 'h' of Exhibition, you will be at this popular spot in the Ingliston Car Park below:
It's only a 15 minute walk from the Terminal:
