Interesting ORD WX Diversions

Fri May 21, 2004 1:02 pm

Big thunderstorms in Chicago tonight have once again caused big delays at ORD. I've seen some interesting post-storm diversion flights on Flight Explorer, including UAL 317, a 733 from GYY (Gary, IN) to ORD, and AAL 9716, a 738 from MDW to ORD. Some other diversion cities include STL, MKE, IND, and even PIA (Peoria, IL) (Maybe United wanted to test out the facilities at GYY for future service Big grin)

Probably IND too. Unless there is weather down there. Last time I was diverted there on TZ; AA, NW and UA had a lot of planes on the ground. I saw a UA 777 come in and stage near the international terminal. It was an awesome day for spotting at IND. I was on a TZ 737-83N refueling and watching all the action going on in Indy!

Does anyone know how often GYY gets ORD diversions?

I would think that Milwaukee would get some too.

Great thread BTW.

Given that airlines prefer to divert to an airport which they already serve, I would suspect that GYY doesn't get that many diversions.

MKE got the following last evening:

AA - LAX, SFO, SJC - 738
UA - LGA - 733
JAL Cargo ANC - 742

All carriers do not have operations at MKE (non-mainline). YES, we have facilities for all the above aircraft and more if needed. Unknown if the bussed the passengers (1hr. 15min. bus trip to ORD) or if they just parked here for the two hour delay.

Look for lots more this weekend as a cold front is expected to stall out over Chicago/S. Wisconsin creating a constant stream of storms over the weekend. (taking off my amateur meterologist hat).

Does anyone know what diversions went to PIA? I am often surprised that PIA doesnt get more diversions. Probably has a lot to do with the airlines manpower etc. there.

Hmmm I don't know, Toledo sure gets a lot of DTW diversions when there is weather, mainly the Northwest international flights. Toledo is only served by Mesaba and Pinnacle in terms of Northwest, not mainline.

747firstclass - The two PIA diversions I saw last nite were AAL MD-80's, not sure of their origin. But given all these diversions, I would assume that the flights were originating out on the west coast. If fuel wasn't an issue, wouldn't these flights get put into a holding pattern?

BTW, ORD just got NAILED again within the last 20 minutes by more storms. 50mph winds, hail, lightning, with 50,000' plus cloud tops. (Cloud tops last nite were in excess of 60,000') As I work about 1/2 mile east of ORD, I noticed no take-offs about 15 minutes prior to the storms, but flights are leaving again now. More storms expected later today. The WX woes at ORD continue.....

Jet service, ya beat me....as a former summit city resident, I used to see a a fair amount of ORD diversions come in over Aboite Twp.

Every once in a while a 742 from wherever (no 744's in those days) and few stretch 8's. Loved watching those 8's then take off and climb out for the hop back to ORD.

Ahh, this explains why there were so any AA planes here yesterday. I was wondering why there was a 738, an older 80, and also the usual newer 80s, Fokker 100s and Eagles.
