MX Acquiring More Slots At CUN

Sat May 22, 2004 6:06 am

I was told by a friend of mine working at CUN that Mexicana Airlines wants to have 10 more slots a day, mainly for international flights.

Does anybody have more accurate information about it. Any new routes, or frequencies?

I hope that happens, since CUN is dominated by foreign carriers. Let's see if that does come true in the short term. I wonder which routes they'll be flying...fighting back UA...opening new routes...complementing AA service...operating charter scheduled service...

or, could those slots be used in order to operate the flights to Central America in case IB decided to move its MIA hub to CUN and benefit from their new alliance?

In the mean time, CUN is heating up. According to justplanes.com:

USAirways received approval for the Ft Lauderdale-Cancun route and plans to start service on July 17th with a weekly flight on Saturdays with the Airbus A319. US Airways did not receive approval for 2 other routes it had applied for, they were Washington Dulles and Baltimore to Cancun.

Frontier Airlines plans to inaugurate weekly nonstop service from Kansas City to Cancun on July 3rd, pending approval from the Mexican government. The airline would operate an Airbus A319 on this route.

I have heard this is for connections to central and South America.

We will see Quito, Panama, Santiago and possibly Sao Paulo
service. This is all in conjunction with American and to
compete with Continental.

Mexicana is about to explode with flights and expand internationally.

Hope this happens soon as we are all very curious as to
what next.

There would have been zero benefit from moving from an area with strong business and O&D traffic to the area with virtually none.

Iberia entirely ruled out moving thier Central American hub to Cancun a while ago, and they recently have decided to keep it in Miami, because, once again they have come to the conclusion that there is no profitable alternative location.

CUN is going through a major project.

Main air terminal expansion for more gates.

A new large helicopters platform.

A new second runway.

What is a fact is that since Mr. Fernando Chico Pardo acquired a stake in the controlling shareholder of ASUR, a brighter future seems to be opening for CUN. I understand that now that Nacional Financiera, S.N.C. is going to sell its stake, Mr. Chico Pardo is likely going to make a bid. The idea is for ASUR's controlling shareholder to be majority-owned by him and minority-owned by Copenhagen Airports. Anyway, the thing is that there are big plans to turn CUN into an important hub optimized for convenient connections.

I was unaware of the plans that NAVEGA mentions and I am very looking forward to seeing them materialize. I am sure that flights between CUN and South America can be successful. Moreover if AA codeshares on them. Hopefully an official announcement will be made soon.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

It was ratified yesterday to me that MX will center most of the charter flights at CUN. These flights will mainly cover Canada, USA and South America. Also, several regular USA destinations already served by MX will be added.

Hopefully in addition to charter flights regularly scheduled service to airports in the major U.S. cities (JFK, ORD, LAX, MIA, SFO, DFW) will be started, as well as at regularly scheduled flights to at least one South American city (GRU would be awesome).

CUN and/or MX insiders, please let us know anything you hear in this regard!

Ok, its my first post in this thread but I was waiting for an email confirmation from my CUN source at MX!

MX requested 10 slots only for charter flights.

So far, this week the've flown:

DEN-CUN-LIB (Liberia, Costa Rica)
