Air Canada And The A380 Will It Ever Happen

Sat May 22, 2004 8:23 am

With all the talk about the Airbus A380 I thought I'd throw my two cents in with Air Canada now setting its problems with its unions could we see an A380 in Air Canada colors within the next TEN YEARS. and if Air Canada would get the A380 what routes would they fly on.

My thoughts.

Dude,
change your medication!!!  Wink/being sarcastic

AC can't even stay profitable with the fleet it currently has, and you want to add more capacity? Whatever you're smoking... share!  Smokin cool
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

Maybe if Airbus made a combi version AC would be interested but i doubt they would choose an all pax A380. Weren't/aren't all of their 744's combi's?

Not really.

But that hasn't seemed to stop folks in the past....

In the next 10 years (or even 20 years), the biggest plane AC will operate is the A346 (if they ever get them!).

AC does not need the A380. The only routes I see are YYZ-LHR and YUL-CDG. Does it justify the acquisition of 2 A380? I don’t think so…

Yes and no. The ones Air Canada ordered were indeed combis. The ones they inherited from the Canadian merger were all pax. And as a hint to what ails AC (among other things), the Air Canada machines (-433 Combis), have P&W engines. The ex-CP machines had GE engines (same problem with the 767-300s).

The ex-CP, all pax 747-475s are now gone and the combis are slated to be retired from the AC fleet in the autumn but who knows. AC is actually acutely short of capacity for overseas. But what they REALLY need are more A330s.

As YUL332LX stated, hardly any of these routes would likely require that sort of capacity. Yes, the YYZ-LHR and YUL-CDG routes could probably support the 380, as well as the YVR-HKG route. However, very few others have that sort of passenger traffic. Why spend the costs to introduce it for so few routes.

As Roberta said, unless they make a combi version of the 380, they have no need for that much capacity. To my knowledge, there are no plans...although that would be interesting to see how they would make that a combi...lower deck cargo and upper deck passengers?

I agree that when they get things sorted out (I prefer the optimistic approach!  Smile) the ideal longhaul aircraft for them will be the 333, 345, and 346. Perhaps the 332 would be good for some really thin routes (anyone know how the S. America routes do?...they still have some, right?).

Its funny this topic started today.

I just heard from an Air Canada employee that they were in talks to consider the A380 at the same time they went for the A345 / A346 order with Airbus. Their initial RFP was for 10 A380's for the runs to LHR / AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA / DEL / HKG / PEK (future route) / SHA (future), SIN and NRT (more business revenue).

I was surprised when I heard this from this lady (who was up there in the inside management). Apparently she worked on the proposal for them.

She said for stupid management reasons they settled for 2 A345 and 3 A346. She felt that these numbers were inadequate. Her opinion was the management is preventing AC from becoming a top airline.

Also her mention was that management made another blunder by buying so many regional jets when AC has been losing so much regional revenue to WestJet, Jetsgo. Her opinon was that AC future lies in ULR and international flights (I agree with her, she is right) and AC should concentrate more on International.

Apparently some up there in the upper management keeps on making decisions to put AC back into some spiralling loop of going down.

Her wish now is that the Germans take over and fire all the upper management to make AC more profitable. Similar to what happened at Chrysler when Benz took over and turfed the idiot managers who tried to bankrupt Chrysler three times.

She envies Emirates / Qantas / BA and even OS a lot

I think it is very unlikely because none of Air Canada's routes could fill an A380 and make a profit. Remember, it was not long ago that Air Canada was considering selling off its entire 747 fleet, thinking THAT was too big.

I can not see any one route where a 380 makes sense. The LHR route is so successful because of fequency. If they did not have that tons of us would have switched to BA or Virgin (when they were in yyz). Frankfurt is good but Luf shares the route. If they run it like a mega bus - stop in LHR, then place x and place y maybe.

How anyone can operate a 744 let alone a 380 on a low-cost airline model is beyond my guessing. The biggest aircraft AC intends to operate in the near future is the 340-600, assuming they get the required financing....

The engine is the heart of an airplane, but the pilot is its soul.

I just hope AC keeps flying...period.

AC is not going to order the A380. What it needs is mega union ball-busting!
