New Runways @ ORD

Sat May 22, 2004 11:02 am

When will construction begin on the new North 9-27 Runway at O'Hare. My mom flew to Newark this afternoon from O'Hare and the delays were horrible. O'Hare needs this runway ASAP..

The current date from the FAA for the O'Hare ROD (Record of Decision) on the ORD EIS (environmental Impact is Study) is September 2005 (see link below). This is the most complex EIS in FAA history. The City of Chicago is seeking RODs on 4 new runways and extensions of two others at the same time. This has never been done before at one airport. A ROD for one runway typical takes 3 or more years. But because of O'Hare delays, and the effect that this has other airports around the country, the ORD EIS is receiving the highest priority.

I was reading about the "cost increase in estimates" the other day so the answer to the Q as in when the new runway will exist should be July 35, 2054. In other words, I personally don't think its gonna happen in our lifetime.

The delays at ORD today where not because of a runway. In case you have not looked at the radar lately, it's storming pretty bad, and was yesterday, and the day before too.

Most (maybe all?) of the land for 9L-27R has been acquired, and there is much less opposition to expansion from those north of the airport recently. Park Ridge is officially neutral now when 3 or 4 years ago they were leading the anti-expansion cries. If the FAA approves the project, (new) 9L-27R will probably get built regardless of what happens financially with any other parts.

ORD has a ton of runways, but most of them intersect. Is this what causes delays? You'd think with as many runways as ORD has, delays wouldn't be much of a problem unless due to weather. Can someone elaborate?

prevailing winds, weather, intersecting runways, LAHSO procedures, lake effect (regarding changing winds), noise abatement, traffic, etc..etc.. are all reasons for the delays caused at o'hare. How would you like to haev 25 jets set up as far out as dubuque iowa and st louis to approach a certain runway and then after having 3 of those a/c land the wind changes and instead of being out of the west (about 300-330 normally in the midwest) they are now out of the east (around 070-150). They need runways that can accomodate a/c of all types that do not intersect (read parallel). I think they are tearing up a few runways as well aren't they? the biggest changes ever seen in the chicago airport system will take effect within the next 10 years, whether it is slot controls, utilizing other airports, or current airport expansion.

"slot controls, utilizing other airports, or current airport expansion"

My guess is the first thing we see is some form of slot controls.
