Hawaiian Airlines DIG-E Players

Sat May 22, 2004 4:42 pm

I have just returned today from working HA's inaugural HNL-SYD-HNL flight and we have introduced a new type of IFE for J class passengers. It's called a Dig-E Player and it is a portable device that looks a lot like a DVD player but it is loaded with 10 full length feature films, hours of current TV shows, hours of music videos, destination information (mostly about Sydney and other places in Australia), video games, and information about Hawaiian Airlines. Judging from the passengers response, they were extremely popular. People loved them!
Do any other carriers have these? I've never seen them before. It sure made our 10 hour 45 minute flight from HNL-SYD go by faster for those in J class.
I was told by our inflight manager that we will soon be offering them in economy class on ALL of our trans-pacific and south-pacific flights.

Aloha

Alaska also offers the same digEplayer. How long does the battery last? According to the website, the battery lasts for around 6 hours. Or is HA making use of the power ports I recall seeing on the first class seats when I checked the aircraft one day? Or was the ports only on the ex-LTU aircraft?

I talked with a Dig-E-Player rep a few weeks ago and he said the batteries last around 9 hrs but there will be spare batteries loaded on all flights.

I am curious, don't HA's 763s already have an IFE system? If so, then are these Dig-E players going to just supplement the existing IFE, or replace it?

AS uses Dig-E players, and they have no other IFE in their aircraft. I would hope that if HA has onboard IFE already that they don't replace it with Dig-E players, but rather supplement it, so that pax who don't want to rent one can still have IFE.

Aloha717200,
It will be used to supplement and not replace the IFE we currently offer.

Will economy passengers have to pay to use a Dig-E player?

HA's 767s do have inflight movies available. On the new 767's its on LCD screens hanging from the ceilings in the aisle. On the ex-LTU aircraft its an older system projecting onto a screen on the bulkhead. So for J class passengers the digEplayer will supplement the on-screen films.

The Dig-E player was actauly devolped by an AS ramper if I'm not mistaken. When I left AS was offering them for free to the first class cabin and for $8-$10 in the coach cabin on longer flights (transcons mostly).
When in doubt, one B pump off

I believe NW is looking to this and other possibilities like are available for rental at some airports since wiring a plane for an IFE after the fact is just about prohibitive and way too time consuming.
