Let's hope this isn't as bad as it sounds....had a girder collapse on Interstate 70 out here in Colorado a week ago, killing 3 people... hope it's nothing like that!

Another source:
http://www.news24.com/News24/World/News/0,,2-10-1462_1531246,00.html
"Emergency services, who were immediately sent to the scene, set off their so-called "red plan" to mobilise help, indicating that there could be a large number of casualties, sources said."

This won't be good....

This is actually the second footbridge tragedy in France in recent months. Late last year a gangway collapsed at Chantiers d'Atlantique as family members of construction workers visited the newly completed ocean liner Queen Mary 2. A series of tragic incidents such as these helps to validate the cluster theory. This incident is truly unfortunate. Perhaps France should evaluate their building safety standards to ensure that no more footbridge accidents occur?

What a pity!!!
I was there yesterday morning arriving from HGK and this terminal is very stunning in the architecture!!!
Hope they will find soon the responsabilities but at the french radio, they say it should be a construction default!!!
ADP was on late in the construction and I remember that the terminal opened and was then closed for some days because of troubles in the structure!!
I hope it won't arm AF, not responsible at all in this case.

WgW2707 : The Chantiers de l'Atlantlique tragedy is absolutely different! The footbridge that collapsed was meant to stay for just some days, during the construction of the ship!!!
Flying is amazing!

It's "Breaking News" on BBC News 24 so it must be bad. It says on there that it was in the check in area, so it must be bad as it would have been in the morning rush!  Sad

Sorry mate, but I think it's a bit previous to be making statements like that, and in slightly bad taste at this point too if I may say so.

Just seen the picture it looks like an entire section has collapsed. It seems like the police were actually evacuating before the collapse but unfortunately not in time to avoid their own deaths. Once again these public servants have given their lives for others. My respects to all of them.  Crying

Edit. It looks like the whole airside section of the terminal between the fourth and fifth jetway from the right has collapsed, as seen on Timothy Feise's photo.

Oh man, that really does look terrible.  Sad

The BBC news article says:

"cracks and falling dust had been observed just before the accident"

I wonder how much time there really was for people to escape. You'd think that with the ceiling crumbling, everyone would evacuate right away...

Can't be certain, but it looks like the jetty section immediately to the east of the central walkway that connects the jetty to the main terminal.

Current situation at CDG (for all I can see) :
Terminal 2E is actually closed, all personnal and remaining passengers evacuated. I guess it will not re-open for a longm very long time.
Access to terminal 2E and 2F by car has been blocked by police and airport authorities. Policemen, firemen and french army are still stationned in front of terminal 2E. Passengers may access 2F by foot only.
It's like CDG's situation has reverted back to april 2003, after terminal 2E's opening has been postponed ! All flights which were suppose to operate from 2E have "no place to go". As far as I know, 2E flights may have been transfered to terminal 2F2, 2C, 2B and 2E (2D and 2F1 are dedicated to Schengen flights). Air France is actually quite busy trying to reorganize their flights splitted into 5 terminals and it seems no clear informations can be obtained (even from interline channels : they are too busy !).
Normal traffic is expected today, but delays are expected all day, due to congested check-in areas, remote-spot boardings, congested immigration area and so on.

Very sad. This looks pretry major. 2E could be closed for quite a long time to come. I didn't expect to be that severe, looking at the pics. How long is that going to take to rebuild. Will 2E open again with it in that state or will they have to rebuild it first. The worrying thing is that it was 11 months old apparently!  Wow!
Again, das news for all concerned.  Sad

FoxNews reports that at least six are dead, but none has yet been confirmed as an American, even though this terminal is frequently the terminal used by passengers transiting to/from the US. TV reports that more may be trapped underneath the rubble, but search dogs haven't found the scent of anyone.

This is a sad day for all. Our prayers go out to the people of France and the families of those killed.

It seems the lower construction below the section of the terminal which has collapsed, gave in. Judging from the pictures the whole terminal is built the same way so I do not expect that terminal to reopen very soon....

What a shame: this thing costs over 750 million euro!

Actually from what I can see, it looks like the floor level is intact, but the shell that forms the wall and the ceiling came down on it.

If it is a design flaw and the whole terminal is built to that design, it may not be salvageable, or at best, require major structural modifications.

That was quite a structural collapse!  Wow!

It will be interesting to see if that walkway's structural design had deficiencies that led to that unfortunate tragedy.
