AA MIA-MAN To Be Announced

Sun May 23, 2004 9:44 pm

The long-rumoured AA service from MIA to MAN should be announced pretty soon....you can already book the flights!

AA 158 arrives at MAN 07.30, AA 157 departs MAN 11.35. Presumably from 1st or 2nd November.

MAN seems to be getting quite a lot of new traffic, is it seasonal or year-round?

Fantastic news! Presume this will be a 763? Will it be a daily service?

Does the JFK-MAN route have enough demand to warrent AA's own flight? I know they codeshare with BA on the route. It probably does pretty well.

Will BA do any transatlantic MAN expansion soon or will it just be AA?

Is it the sole new transatlantic from MIA or can we expect a batch of new destination with their brand new terminal at MIA.?

Can we expect in the future MIA BRU, AA seems appreciate SNBA with the opening last week of JFK BRU after ORD BRU.

A daily MIA BRU can connect BRU with a lot of cities in central and south america + all AA carribbean network.

More good news for MAN, looks like 2 November for the first UK-US flight as it doesn't show for 1 Nov (means a 1 Nov start from MIA though).

This is very good news, it appears AA have seen an opportunity here at MAN with the recent (re)-introduction of the BOS service now the MIA.

Although the flights start in NOV (Winter Season) I must ask, are the flights on a year round or seasonal basis?

AA787,

Both AA and DL have operated JFK-Manchester in the past, however neither was able to make it work.

STT757- I never can understand how some airlines like Co and BA can make a route work where as others can't. Maybe AA will do a 757 service like they do on the BOS-MAN route.

With that new 757 route, I think they should do what CO does and put some new business class seats on it (like the ones on the 763). AA needs a consistent, good T/A product. They have said that these flights make money for them and I think upgrading their equipment with new seats, IFE etc. would help them make even more money. I guess I can only dream though, considering today's financial situation.

AA787,

CO does well with their EWR-Manchester route, they fly a 777 on the route.

The problem with DL's and AA's former JFK-Manchester route is..

Competition from British Airways and Pakistan Airways which heavily discounts the JFK-Manchester segments.

And..

AA and DL lack sufficient feed at JFK.

With regards to AA flying 757s from JFK I think it's very possible, Barcelona (year round) comes to mind.

I wouldnt agree with that, considering the many European flights each operate from JFK. Also, DL has been gradually improving its domestic operation at JFK, as of late.

Does seem odd to add Miami in winter schedule especially when VS have only just re-introduced the winter flights to Orlando !
Now only neede Los Angeles and we're back to the routes served before the Laker Crash those many years ago !

Ah, good news for MAN.  Smile

What's the likelihood of AA reintroducing a non-stop service to MAN from DFW? Lots and lots of connection possibilities there, though mainly to similar places as from ORD, ATL...

Pe@rson-
I hope BA decides that they need to build up their MAN longhaul operation and open MAN-DFW  Smile. I just hope that if DFW-MAN reopens(which very well could given AA's MAN build up) it is operated by BA. It's nice to see white aircraft at DFW every once in a while  Smile.

At the same time though, I can't figure out in AA's system what DFW offers that ORD and MIA do not offer as DFW seems to be a combination of the two, albeit with a little bit stronger domestic network.

CO had planned for a long time to re-introduce the 777 for the summer timetables, I guess due to predicted high demand over the summer months for tourist traffic. AFAIK (from what I've gathered from previous threads, amongst other things) the MAN-USA flights do have high Y class load factors during the summer.

For whatever it's worth, although it's not yet listed on SABRE's "New Market" news page, the service has indeed been loaded into SABRE. Flight 158 starts operating on 1 Nov and will leave MIA at 1830 and arrive at MAN at 0750 the next day. It will be operated with a 763. The return flight, flight 157, will depart MAN at 1135 and arrive at MIA at 1615.

I would expect a press release about the new service tomorrow, Monday.

757's have operated from JFK to Europe in the past. BA flew to BHX and to GLA with one, and TWA operated to LIS and BCN.

I haven't got my copies of Manchester Airport's Flightcheck at the moment because I'm at uni and I left it at home, so I can't check the exact details... but I'm sure they operated a 777 there for some of the time, and then switched it to a 767-400 later in the year.

They definitely used to operate the 777 in 2001 because we parked next to one at Terminal 2 having landed on a Canada 3000 flight - then I saw another one two weeks later.

In fact, if you go to the a.net photo search page, and fill in the appropriate fields... you'll probably find that quite a lot of CO 777s visited over the past few summers!

They did indeed... and it was last summer when they downgraded it. That was towards the end of July, if my memory serves me correctly. Perhaps not as much traffic to ATL as New York, or maybe they needed the 777 elsewhere... anyway, the 767 appears to be staying on the route at the moment.

Just as expected! Thanks for the confirmation, this is awesome news! The plan is for AA to run a second daily to Manchester year-round. Winter months it will go to Miami, during the summer months it will go to Boston. Maybe in the future both MIA and BOS will go year-round.

Brussels, Manchester, Barcelona, Rome, and Frankfurt have been tossed around. We are seeing MAN become a reality, and in 2005/2006, I would not be surprised to see Brussels and/or Frankfurt. Barcelona and Rome are the longer shots.

Two things MIA offers over DFW: strong O&D from Manchester and Caribbean connections. Manchester-Caribbean is a huge market.

Yes Delta did operate a 777 into MAN before changing it to a MD11 and then a 767-300. I believe it was June 1, 2000 when the 777 was introduced on the ATL-MAN route.

Sounds good to me. About time MAN got some new US destinations in its portfolio. Now all it needs is a LAX service and that should do. Plus, the place looks a lot better wiv 2 AA aircraft on the ground, something to look forward to when i go to work now!

Remember in the 1990's Manchester had seasonal 2nd daily seasonal Chicago services not sure if the flight number was AA120 (may have been the DFW flight?)
The Miami flight is fantastic news! But can't understand why it would be a winter seasonal service?
The Manchester summer Florida market is massive and scheduled flight prices are very competetive when compared with charters!
A lot of people don't want to do that Orlando thing! went down the Keys last year! Fantastic!
Hope it does well and is year round!
Hope American does what BA does'nt want to from MAN & and create a decent transatlantic hub!

It may operate during the summer five times a week (xTuWe). It depends on how much Miami>>Europe traffic AA/BA can get on the route and connect through BA's Manchester-Europe flights.

I would fully expect the MAN-MIA route to be year round.

MAN-BOS is a very seasonal, point-to-point market.

MAN-MIA should enjoy much more robust traffic levels due to the year-round demand from tourists and the important AA MIA hub which sould provide traffic from well beyond the point-to-point market. Given American's huge presence in Miami the service may well steal some business traffic to Central/South America that currently travels via Continental through Newark.

The Dallas/Ft Worth service never really worked due to the lack of premium traffic, possibly due to the fact that DFW was mainly offering the same connections as the existing well-established ORD service. On the other hand the MIA service should offer a whole new range of connections, and will be almost entirely complimentary to the ORD service.

It would be great to see American Airlines make a real success of a new Trans-Atlantic route at Manchester and return to their peak of 3 daily MAN-USA servies (1 ORD MD-11, 1 ORD 762, 1 JFK 762)

AA used to fly MIA-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA in the '90s, and it stunk. I think it got axed in '99 or so, but it, along with JFK-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, were two of AA's weakest int'l routes at the time. I'd be surprised to see them re-enter the market, but I could be wrong. Maybe Rome would be a candidate, I think AA got scared with BCN when their advanced bookings got JFK-BCN were less-than-desireable.

There two specific problems facing the route:

1) Premium passengers flocked to Lufthansa, ignoring AA. Now, with two class 767s instead of 3-class, there is more profit potential.
2) It was during the "German tourist scare". German tourism to Miami plummeted in the mid-1990s due to an ongoing series of murders and robberies. Those are over now, and German tourism has since greatly rebounded.

Today, the route is much more viable. I also don't think AA would have has much trouble filling MIA-BCN than they did JFK-BCN because of LatAm connections available, and during the summer they can get a good amount of cruise traffic. Again, a high-density configured 763 is what makes these routes possible. You would not be seeing MIA-MAN if it were not for the new 763 configuration.

Shame its seasonal!
I think this route has real potential, the demand for Florida from the northwest of England is massive.
Hope American will review the situation for all year round service.

They will definitley review the route for year-round service. When AA launched Miami-Punta Cana in June 2002 and Miami-Guanacaste Liberia in January 2004, they were both launched as seasonal, but both turned into year-round.

However, it has been in AA's plans to offer two dailies to Manchster year-round: year-round from Chicago, and the second frequency switching between Boston and Miami based on season. We'll have to see, MIA-MAN can support year-round service, perhaps at 5w during the summer.
