UK Services From CVT?

Mon May 24, 2004 6:14 am

In 2001, Coventry itself had a total population of 300,848 - over one quarter of a million people. Add to this the nearby towns and villages, and that figure's quite a bit more. In view of this seemingly large population, what is the likelihood of at least twice-daily services to EDI, GLA, BFS and DUB? The obvious problem is the closeness of BHX, but the local people of Coventry might prefer to fly from their local airport if prices are low and if there's choice and convenience (hence the at least twice-daily frequency). The seemingly ideal aircraft would be the cost-effective, 48-seat ATR-42. It should, in my view, operate on a low-cost, no-frills basis. Any thoughts?

I would expect that maybe FR to set up some routes from CVT..

I would expect the "key" routes of the UK to be set up either by ThomsonFly or another UK airline..

EDI, GLA, BFS, DUB are very popular routes along with CDG and ORK.. so expect some more routes to open from CVT..

I would expect maybe a small regional jet service or similar prop aircraft, maybe even a bigger jet service.

Regards,

CM

Oh dear. Two words I hate to hear when discussing such routes: "jet service". A 48-seat prop, POSSIBLY rising to an ATR-72, would fit perfectly and be far more cost-effective than a jet.

I'd like to see something like that happen at OXF.

There are a number of secondary airports in the UK from which routes to the key cities could be operated. These include Robin Hood (Sheffield, Doncaster and Hull alone have more than 1 million people in total); Oxford (Kidlington); Chester; Kent International; Coventry; and Chester. In addition, an airport like Norwich could do with a twice-daily service (by an ATR-42 or similar PROP) to GLA, BFS and DUB (EDI already exists).

As I'm just down the road from CVT at the University of Warwick for the next 3 and a bit years, personally I'd love to see some expansion out of Coventry, particularly by LCCs as Thomsonfly are doing (particularly to EDI or ABZ as my girlfriend is at St.Andrews!) BHX is not too bad to get to at all, but having a good choice of cheap flights out of CVT would be a great alternative... and it has just as good road links as BHX and EMA have (not far from M69 and M1, and mainly dual carriageways).

Most unfortunately, as I'm sure quite a lot of people are aware, there's quite a strong NIMBY brigade in the Coventry area, who are coming up with all sorts of "scare tactics" to try and put a halt to expansion at CVT. You might find the following websites interesting:

Didn't KLM or KLM uk ran twice daily CVT-AMS for some time back in the nineties?

Air UK definitely did, but it was when they were Air UK, not KLM uk. They operated a BAe-146.

How do I know this? In the early 90s, the BBC filmed an episode of the childrens' TV programme "Chucklevision" at Coventry Airport, which showed shots of an Air UK 146 landing, taxiing, and passengers disembarking.

KLM or AirUK NEVER operated from CVT to AMS on a regular basis in the 90s.

These posts are becoming tedious Pearson, " lets say a low cost airline with ATR-42s based at ..........."

Then don't read them. Quite simple, really. You know what they will include, so do yourself a favour and not open them. My titles are always sufficiently descriptive and indicative of the content.

Oh yeah, I remember! OK - go and get an ATR-42, and I'll be your first passenger CVT-EDI!

(Actually, Leuchars Air Base would be even closer but I doubt the RAF would be too happy...)

Pe@rson Airways already exists....its called Ryanair. And funnily enough, I believe they used to operate ATR42s in the late 80's/early 90's  Wink/being sarcastic  Laugh out loud

LOL @ GKirk

I've got two pictures of old Ryanair aircraft before they got the first 737-200s - one was some sort of Shorts flying boat (I think) and the other was a Rombac 1-11.

Wasn't the Rombac 1-11 that put you off offering jet services, was it? Big grin

LMAO Gkirk. Shame you're not coming to the MEGA MAN Meet, as I'd have to kick you to high heaven.  Wink/being sarcastic

There's quite a lot of potential for domestic flights (plus flights to DUB) from secondary airports in the UK, like CVT, OXF, Carlisle, Robin Hood, Norwich, Chester, Kent Intl, etc. A twice-weekday service would be the minimum necessary to entice businesspeople, which annoyingly would mean that some services would have to leave in the later morning and mid-afternoon in order to benefit from aircraft and staff utilisation, but which wouldn't be of much use to businesspeople. Hmm.  Laugh out loud I'll have to consult with my CEO, BW.  Wink/being sarcastic
