OAK-SFO?

Mon May 24, 2004 12:14 pm

Does anyone know why this is listed as a flight? It makes absolutely no sense to me:

Alaska
Flight Number 9004
Departure City (Airport) Oakland, CA (OAK)
Departure Time 05/23/2004 04:03 PM
Arrival City (Airport) San Francisco, CA (SFO)
Arrival Time 05/23/2004 04:05 PM
Remaining Flight Time 00:00
Aircraft Type Boeing 737-700
Current Altitude 0 feet
Current Groundspeed 0 mph
Flight Status Arrived

Thanks for your help!

They aren't trucking it across the bridge or putting it on a barge. Its flying across isn't it? Makes logical sense to list it as a flight to me.

Positioning flight. I heard they've done this with 747s before.

Is it possible to purchase a ticket for this sector alone?

Probably for a flight coming out of their maintenance facility at OAK going over to SFO to eventually turn out a scheduled flight. Wouldn't be at all surprising to see one SFO-OAK with another aircraft to put a different aircraft -into- maintenance.

UA used to fly SFO-OAK with 727's on a scheduled basis, it was even listed in the Guinness book as the shortest scheduled jet flight...

You got me on the day Im here Mike...It just came out of C-check and the plane was need in SFO due to a mechanical on another plane. The flight flew over and departed as flight #589 to SEA.

OPNL...actually we didn't send one over there. The plane that broke spent the night here. Since OAK is so close we can drive the part over. The plane will be repaired here tonight. To make up for this one of our normal RON flights will ferry to SEA at 2100 tonight. Flight 9005.

I have been here all day dealing with these suckers!

FedEx still flying sometimes SJC-OAK MD-11!! UA does fly all the time 777 or 744 SFO and OAK. OAK is UA maintenance base. I saw once flight tracker last summer SFO-OAK FedEx MD11. Same idea, MIA-FLL every once a while UPS or FedEx flew a hop shortest distance. I don't know if PIE-TPA have done this before. Last week, I saw one of the American B737-800 MDW-ORD. After AA charter flight to MDW and re position ORD for next flight.

Big777jet...UAL does not fly SFO-OAK anymore. That was for maintance reasons mainly. There is no MX base in Oakland anymore though. All UAL mx is done in San Francisco, or contracted out.

You are right with FedEx, I see them come across the Bay in the middle of the night to make up their 4am flight to ANC/NRT.

Always -nice- to have a spare close-by....  Big grin

>>>OPNL...actually we didn't send one over there.

Was just a guess. We use SEA as a point to shuttle some aircraft in/out of maintenance at PAE, so I figured maybe youse guys did it too...

It was a good guess....Looks like N318AS is the only plane in C-check at OAK right now. I forgot to ask my buddies girlfriend if they had another plane inbound tommorow.

It was very nice having a plane ready over there. We were oversold all day, so we had a whole lot of people to get out of here.

Indeed this flight did happen, I saw it myself. About 15 minutes ago, when I was passing the airport, the aircraft was still at the gate and this was around 8:30 p.m. So I don't know where its heading. It was standing right next to a Cathay Pacific jet when i saw it.

AS739X-

I didn't say UA flies OAK-SfO scheduled flights. I mentioned OAK is UA MX there. They always fly ferry back and fourth from SFO to OAK MX there and then fly back to SFO for next flight. Jeez! Are you sure OAK UAL MX is closed for permanent? How come? How do they check up 744 and 777? Where they are going to MX for 744 and 777 right now?

Big777jet

PS - All I know UA 744 MX is in BFM (Mobile,AL downtown airport). What is about 777 check up? Where 777 go to?

As739x,
When I was at my friends house in Foster City, I saw the ferry flight right about to land at SFO, when I was driving home past the airport, I saw an Alaska Airlines 737 standing next to a Cathay Pacific. I assumed this Alaska plane was the one that was part of the ferry flight, but I could be wrong.

Easy my friend. I was not implying you said they had scheduled flights. Yes, I am 100 percent sure that it is closed. My co-workers sister and husband are based at SFO now because of it. The hanger was closed about a year ago, if not more. ALL Ual mx is done in San Francisco if its not contracted out. There is plenty of hangers for 777 and 744's here. They have room for 3 widebodies at one time on the east side of the base, and about 4 narrow bodies on the west side. They also have some remote tent like hangers for 2 or 3 more narrow bodies. All plane types can be done here, but I know they contract some 737 stuff to TZ at IND. UAL's MX base in IND also closed at the same time. I think it belongs to FedEx now.

On 4/20/53 a Western Airlines DC-6B on the last leg of a LAX-SFO-OAK routing crashed into the SF bay on the SFO-OAK leg. I was raised in SF in the fifties and remember it quite well. Later I went to work for WAL in SFO.

UAL's OAK MX base is certainly closed. If you drive past the hanger, you can still see the outline of the United symbol. As AS said, it closed with the IND MX facility. What a shame! It was always nice to see a UA 777 or 747 at OAK - even if it wasn't flying passengers.

FedEx still flying sometimes SJC-OAK MD-11!!

Maybe with a DC-10, but I've not seen an MD-11 here at SJC. Admittedly, I was gone for 9 months, but now I work across the field from the FedEx ramp and while we see -30's in here every day, I've not seen an MD-11.

At one point there was a SFO-OAK flight on United (I'm 90% certain)....I remember a TV news story about triple mileage points being doled out for the whole year, IF you took a United flight. Not sure what other restrictions there were, but lots of people were taking the ultra-short Bay hop between the two airports, and would qualify for triple miles the rest of the year.

Obviously this crazy scheme was several years ago. I'm thinking '80's here.

Didn;t there used to be a helicopter airline called "SFO" that provided service between SFO, SJC, and OAK? I think it's intent was to serve connecting/transfer passengers arriving at one airport and departing from the other. I remember their small ticket counter at SJC back in the 80's.

The old UAL signs are off the building now, replaced by advertisements for the Oakland A's baseball team.

I've taken the SFO-OAK flight, not as a positioning flight, but as a scheduled flight aboard a 747SP way back when!

Seem to remember something about the passengers getting the MileagePlus minimum of 500 miles guaranteed for that flight--all 10 of them!

ASSFO's story is correct.
With a 737-400 out of service and a 737-700 fresh out
of check in OAK, I set up a ferry to get the plane from OAK
to SFO to get those passengers on their way.

Planenutz"
There was a scheduled helicopter service.
They had helicopters painted like bees.
I think they went out of service sometime in the 1980s.

During the 1980's, both UA and CO had scheduled flights between OAK and SFO. CO's morning IAH flight from OAK was a 733 that stop at SFO before going to IAH...vice versa. Likewise, the flight from DEN that lands at OAK around 7pm, used to continue on to SFO with a 727-100.

Other short flights included WA Transworld Airlines (USA)">TW's night flight from OAK-SJC-STL with MD-80's, WA's OAK-FAT-SLC with 737-200's, FL's OAK-SCK-DEN flights with 737-200's, AS's 727 flights from SJC to OAK and AA's 727's & MD-80's to SMF and on to DFW.

I'm sure PSA and Air Cal had some local flights as well in their day.

In addition, OAK had some commuter flights like Far West YS-11's between OAK-FAT (competition for WestAir), WestAir's flights between OAK and FAT with EMB's and J31's. And the short-lived Sierra Expressway J31 flights from OAK to MRY, STS, ACV, RDD, MFR and SMF.

about the OAK-SFO flight, how long was the duration of the flight from takeoff to landing and what was the approx. "cruising" altitude?
