Interesting Sights At IND Today

Mon May 24, 2004 11:25 pm

Good morning all...just got back from SCE this morning and as we taxied into the gate at IND i saw a couple of interesting things. 1) An ATA L-1011 in the old colors (the real ugly ones) was parked at the international arrivals building. 2) I saw an ATA 757 parked at gate D-8 and a United 737 parked at gate D-10...that is supposed to be a USAirways concourse. Anybody have any idea of what is up with that? I saw the ATA and United planes parked at the D concourse on Saturday when i left and found it odd.

The 757 on the D-Concourse is an overflow gate for either MCO or PIE...it should have been a 757-300.

Why ual was over there is a mystery...maybe overflow for them as well..

The L-1011 that you saw on the cargo ramp is N194AT..this aircraft still has the old paint scheme on it....there is also N188AT which has a modified paint scheme from the PHH days. (Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays).

The old paint job was a classic.....there are uglier paint jobs out there.

I do believe it was a 757-300...but maybe the UAL plane being over there has something to do with the code share deal...who knows??

The thing that really sucks is if i had a camera i would have been able to get a GOOD shot of both air traffic control towers in the same picture.  Sad

UAL could have been a diversion from ORD? Also, UAL overnights a plane on the D coucourse.TC

When I visit IND, (student at IU-Bloomington) there is rarely more than 3 US aircraft on the ground. Typically I see TZ planes docked at D gates so its not all that odd. As for the UAL plane, I'm not really sure what the deal is.

I found it weird because there were a couple of empty united gates. And just like saturday when i left, the two plane were at the D concourse again today...strange

Although US primarily rents out all of concourse D, they do not lease gates D8 and D10. I believe both belong to the airport now. UA often uses D10 as an overflow, and overnight gate. ATA uses D8 as well. There are strong rumors running around that UA will move to the D gates, which would free up some more space for TZ, which they want desperately.

The biggest problem is that the leases for the gates are more expensive over there at D compared to C, so UA will not move unless they get a favorable lease. They are in the negotiation process. I warn you though that this is a rumor, and not necessarily true. I heard it from a UA gate agent in IND a couple weeks ago.

C cost more than D. HP was looking at C-4 but D-10 was cheaper by thousands. Ended up moving to A-4, old TWA gates.

US only controls 3 gates at D. The two on the end are BAA controlled.

The far side is all express of US.

I think they should move NW, CO, and DL into concourse D since they have a code sharing agreement...move US to concourse A (where NW is) and ATA would have CO's gates in C. There.  Big thumbs up
