Variations Of Titling On CO 757s

You'll notice in this pic that the CO 757 on the left has a much larger "Continental" title than the one on the right. I've noticed this variation several times on different CO 757s, although the smaller titles seems to be more common. I thought at first that maybe they used to all be one way, and as the planes get a new paint job they will recieve the current title size. But looking through pics in the dbase I see pics from the mid 90's through the current of CO 75s with both sizes of the name. So I can't seem to figure out why this is, anyone know? I know this is just a petty little detail but it's kinda bugging me lol. And the 752 is the only plane I've noticed this on in the CO fleet...

The size may depend on whether the title is a painted on stencil or a decal. Also, different paint shops CO uses may have different specs. for the title.

Just my two cents.

if you look closely, the globes on the tails are slightly different as well- the one on the right is larger than that on the left.

I always get the impression it has something to do with the varients. The smaller titles are always doing the transatlantic routes I think.

I'm sure some where on Gordons desk there is a memo saying the main title will be made bigger or small. Airlines do this all the time. Some changes are suttle and it takes a keen eye to see the changes. The paint shop that CO uses has no baring on what size title are applied to the aircraft as the 'masking' is ordered by the airline and there is really only one company that does this for the airline. Each aircraft has its own maintenance schedule, and since our oldest 757s are approaching 10 years old, most have undergone a check which has required a stripping down of paint, inspection and repair of skin and fuselage joints, followed by a subsequent repaint (C/D). I don't have the data on the maintenance schedules of ships 117/118 at my fingertips, but I would venture to guess that the discrepancy is a result of a different paint spec applied to one aircraft or the other at some point along the line during regular mx.

Thanks for the comparison, CAL. Because in each case the older pictures show the larger titles, and the newer pictures show the smaller titles, it seems safe to say that CO is moving (or has moved) towards smaller titles on the 757 fleet.

Has there been a similar change on the 737/767/777? Any CO insiders know the reason for the change?

Perhaps it has something to do with not wanting to paint on/over the doors?

Yes, I was actually thinking the same thing--that would definitely make sense.
