Malaysia Airlines Announce Full Year Profit + News

Tue May 25, 2004 7:20 am

Malaysia Airlines (MH) announced a full year post-tax profit of USD 121.3 million, an increase of 37% or USD 32.8 million compared to the previous year. Total revenue for the company increased by 7.6% to USD 2.6 billion despite the sharp contraction in operations caused by SARS and the Gulf War in the first quarter.

For the last quarter of the financial year, international passenger load factor increased from 67.2% to 70.5% while domestic load factor increased from 67.8% to 71.9%. The overall passenger load factor increased from 67.3% to 70.7% while the overall cargo load factor dropped from 66.2% to 60.4% (all compared with the same period last year).

Other news:
  • Frequencies will be increased to the following cities: Beijing, Xiamen, Hong Kong, Osaka, Dhaka, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bombay, Ho Chi Minh City, Phnom Penh, Vienna and Paris.

  • New destinations: Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Cochin, Siem Reap, Kunming, Wuhan and Chengdu.

  • Refurbishment of the airline's 32 long/medium-haul aircrafts will proceed as planned, with the first refitted B772 to enter service November 2004.

  • Will overhaul its inflight meal services.

  • Feel free to add any other news.

This is great news for Malaysian Airline!

They recently upgraded their Cairo and Istanbul flights to dedicated, separate flights with A330s.

Looks like they follow SQ into Ahmedabad.

What is the policy between Malaysia and India regarding flights? Beside China, India seems to be one of the most important markets for MH.

    Further updates:
  • Chengdu, Wuhan and Kunming will be served 3 times weekly by October.

  • Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Cochin will be served 3 times weekly "soon enough."

  • Re-routing of its New York flights - most probably via Stockholm or another European city.

  • Introduce twice weekly Kuching-Sydney flights in October.

  • One B772 is due September 2004 and the last one due February 2005.

  • "Refresh" the F50.

I read in a Lebanese newspaper that traffic to Beirut has grown significantly and is much higher than they anticipated. It stated that they were looking at increasing service by next winter. Nothing firm yet however.

Would be interesting to see if they add a 4th weekly flight via Dubai or make the route non-stop and no longer via Dubai or a combination of both.

Also from today's The Star news:

Its flights to New York, currently via Dubai, will, by October, operate through Stockholm or other European cities that offer better yield. Dubai will, nevertheless, remain a secondary hub for MAS for the Middle East region.

Looks like Stockholm is the favorite over Copenhagen. Nothing firm yet though.

Global alliance and fleet replacement are still being discussed.

I thought MH are going to serve Kuching-Melbourne first? I could have sworn that I've seen the schedule in Amadeus but it doesn't seem to be there anymore.

Keno: MH has decided to launch Kuching-Sydney in favor of Kuching-Melbourne. I doubt the Kuching-Melbourne flight took off.

By the way, it seems like the Sarawak Tourism Minister has been lobbying hard for MH to provide more direct intercontinental services to Kuching. However, the success of these flights remain questionable (so are MH's LHR-PEN/LGK-KUL flights).

The KCH-MEL service never got off the ground. The new boss of MH scrapped it immediately and actually criticized the guy who initiated that plan, as there was never enough demand in the first place.

I see... On a separate issue, does anyone know when exactly Skytrax will announce Best Cabin Staff 2004? Their website says the result will be out in May but no specific dates. I'm confident that MH will win it again for the 4th year running  Big thumbs up

So which long haul routes will go 2 class?

I guess AKL will be one? What are the Yeilds like through AKL for MH? Any plan to increase frequency anytime soon?

Not going to take long to do all of the 772's.

I guess KUL-AKL will be 2-class if served solely by the 772s (currently the 744s/772s are flying this route). With 2 new 772s coming in Nov/Dec 2004, they will probably replace the 744s on the KUL-AKL route.

It will take about 2 to 3 years to complete the refurbishment of the 772s as they are due for heavy maintenance starting this year. Same case for the 744s.

I wonder if MH thinks of routing their EWR flight through Vienna. There is no competition from Vienna to the US for OS at the moment. Could be a possibility.......
    Any comments welcome....

I think Stockholm will be the best Scandinavian destination, because of its central location within Scandinavia and the Baltics.

    Hope the choose ARN  Smile

There will be a slight downgrade in capacity if MH chooses to operate 7 weekly B772 flights into AKL. Plus, it will be summer for the southern hermisphere when October/November rolls around (i.e. high season). Perhaps MH will upgrade some flights to B744 or increase its frequency into AKL.

I am curious whether MH will use the B744 to destinations such as Frankfurt, Zurich, Tokyo etc. where there are some demand for first class and cities such as Manchester to be downgraded to B772, but served with a higher frequency.

The "increased frequency" cities list looks more like the cities that MH had already increased when the summer 2004 schedules commenced. Can't really see them operating more than 3 weekly flights into Vienna, but I do know that they are planning to increase their frequency to Paris from 5 to 6 weekly flights.

Vienna, Munich, Copenhagen and Stockholm has been lobbying MH to use them as a stop-over city en-route to NYC. All these cities have one thing in common, i.e. no American/foreign carriers serve these city pairs. They are only served by the home (home being Europe) carrier. Munich offers the most connections within Europe, but MH also faces stiff competition with LH. There isn't much O&D traffic between VIE and KUL, hence this will not be feasible for future expansion into NYC and VIE. And this leave us to CPH and ARN - perhaps ARN is giving MH a sweeter deal and not to mention, tourist traffic from Sweden to Malaysia. If I remember correctly, trade between Sweden and Malaysia is greater than trade between Denmark and Malaysia - a more obvious reason why ARN is prefered.

    Just my 2 cents worth!

Apparently there is good demand for KCH-SYD. Most probably different guy who suggested it since this route was announced after that guy was transferred. Not sure about the LHR-PEN/LGK though (probably same guy who was transferred).

    The777Man,
It seems like Stockholm is the best candidate thus far, although there might be a slight chance that it be Copenhagen. They will probably load it into their CRS by July. As much as I like the B777, I believe MH will use the B744 to New York. The B777 will be reconfigured to a two-class aircraft, thus the B744 will be the only aircraft to have first class.

Am curently in Chennai awaiting to depart for KUL on MH181 on 9M-MRJ which has just arrived and Malaysia Airlines seems to be doing rather brisk trade here in India. My flight from KUL-MAA was almost full in Economy but with only a few in F and C... looks like C is quite busy on the way back this lunchtime and I expect Y will be similar. I gather MAS flights into India all operate on a pooled service concept where the airlines of each country concerned - ie - AI/IC and MH can only sell the same amount of seats on each given day or week or whatever the agreed time-scale is.

So, although MAS currently operates the A330 and B777 into India it cannot sell a 'full' flight since the capacity is not reciprocated by Indian carriers.

MAS however does receive quite a lot of news here in Chennai and seems to be on a par with SQ as a premium airline for travel into/out of India. Local news reports here carried the MAS news story given above but also stated that it will be cancelling its Dubai-Newark service in favour of Stockholm - which many agents/passengers here in India seem upset about - as I expect many connected via Dubai on to MH90/91 for Newark.

    Thanks for the info!

Checked in the CRS today for flights DXB-EWR in the next few days and it seems that MH is more full than EK although the MH flight seems to be full all the way from KUL.

Regardless of 744 or 777, I would still want to try MH to ARN as I had a very nice experience on them a few years ago.

Do they have planned any changes for ZRH?

MH was the first airline on which I flew intercontinental (AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA - DXB - KUL) and I always loved beeing on one of their aircrafts.

MAS is reverting its Chennai flights to evening flights again this July (they re-scheduled the flights from evening to morning this March).

The777man: MH has been doing well on its flights to EWR. My brother couldn't even get a seat to EWR this August because their flights are so popular (the same goes for JAL from KUL to JFK). I guess he is going to settle for CX instead.

MasA380: Welcome to the forum! I believe MH is dropping DXB in favor of ARN as the stopover city. The payload restrictions on DXB-EWR is making a dent on MH's profit on that route, hence the need to re-route it via a European city. Also as I have mentioned earlier, MH will probably upgrade the EWR flights to B744 and I doubt MH's B744s have sufficient range to fly DXB-EWR.

Btitravel: Back in 1999, MH had plans to fly 5 times weekly into ZRH (that's 5 years ago - so it's kinda outdated). From what I hear from another member in this forum, the yields on the ZRH route is really good. Maybe he can give you a better update than I do.

I just got in on MH16 into Amsterdam and boy was it packed! I was quite surprised as KL808 was full and thought MH16 operating with 744 equip nowadays should not get full... but KLM and MAS seem to be doing well on the route! Arriving at AMS - gate announcements were made for the many passengers en route to Barcelona, Oslo, Stockholm and Maastricht with KLM.

Trip report on LHR-AMS-KUL-MAA-COK-MAA-KUL-AMS-LHR coming soon...

    Perhaps they are hinting something?

The Malaysian press reported that MH has open skies agreement with Scandinavia, but they didn't specify the country.

Also, it seems like MH looks set to resume its flights to Fukuoka this November.
