Air India To SFO In 05'

Tue May 25, 2004 7:44 am

I just read a report in the Economic Times that Air India is planning flights to San Francisco when it get's it's A340-300's. I think it's great that Air India is finally looking to the west coast of the US for expansion (it should have happned a long time ago), but I don't' understand why isn't Air India looking into perhaps flying to Vancouver? Obviously Los Angles and San Francisco have HUGE Indian communities but so does Vancouver.

Also, it looked like the article said some of the flights will be also operated with the A343.

I read the same Economic Times article and unfortunately its the typical uninformed crap from them. It's been a long time since I've seen anything accurate from them.

Sit back and relax, 'cos these guys love jumping to conclusions more than our teenagers on airliners.net do!

Yeah, the Ecotimes were not the most trustful source in the past  Smile Many assumptions w/o base... Btw Here is the link to the article:

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/696015.cms

One question:

It had signed an agreement early this month for taking two 747-400s on lease

Whom did AI lease the 744s from? KE again?

I agree with the thought of taking this news report with a grain of salt. There have been many occasions where local news reports regarding new air service has been grossly over blown and plain incorrect. Like I said before, I don't believe anything until those wheels hit the runway.

Superfly,
It's Phillipine Airlines. BTW we also get:
EVA Air
Lufthansa
British Air
Virgin
KLM
Singapore Air
Cathay Pacific
China Air
Air China etc etc.

BUT having Air-India would be AWESOME  Smile

744...I think Superfly ment A340 carriers into SFO.British/KLM/Eva Don't have A340 and I have never seen China Airlines or Air China bring them into San Francisco, nor do I see them in the near future. To much cargo revenue here.

I have heard this rumor before. I have heard they will be via AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, but will originate in BGL (Bangalore). I hope there is some truth to this article, but only time will tell. AI at SFO would be an awesome sight.

LH still operates A340's to SFO, albeit they are A346 not A343 or 342. I hope we see SQ's A345 here as well soon.

I love Air India's expansion and their coming out to be a bigger, better airline. They already are on par with many international airlines and hopefully they can continue to expand their route network! As it is, they are serving LAX!!! Maybe I would've tried them, but in June I will be taking Thai Airways to India - but I'm sure the Air India service would no doubt be awesome!

More news to this affect , just read somewhere that AI also plans to start BOM-CPH-LAS and increase frequency to ORD via JFK. the CPH-LAS route would be flown by 773's/333's which AI plans to lease pretty soon. As and when this is done more routes will be opened up to AI . More in the pipe line are ORD-DEL and ORD-BOM non stops besides JFK-DEL and JFK-BOM non stops.Think united was planning to start ORD DEL non stops pre 9/11 , AI just started working on it.
AI has already started the LAX service ,I am hoping that this will be turned into a non stop as well. Since AI is already picking up roughly 2 744's a year a lot of routes will tend to open up , South America is also definitely on the map. Sean would probably know more about this .....

Go AI  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I heard that AI’s impressed with the success of NW’s BOM-MSP route (which stops in AMS) as well as IcelandAir’s KEF-MSP flight and will soon announce BOM-KEF-MSP. The flights will operate with Boeing 767-400ER, an aircraft in which AI will become the third operator of (although I’m not certain if these planes will be new-builds or ex/leased-CO/DL.)

IndianFlyboy,

CPH-LAS route would be flown by 773's/333's

Come on now, if you are going to lie, do it correctly. It has to be an A330-200, not A330-300!

JFK-DEL/BOM are definitely gonna happen. Why else would they want the A340? It could never be to start service to smaller cities. Air India is too good for that.

Personally I think Air India should fly BOM-FCO-MXP-PRG-ZRH-GVA-MUC-AMS-MAN-YYZ-YUL-IAD-PHL-ATL-MIA-DFW-IAH-SFO-YVR.

Also someone should look into non stop service to Fiji. Still Air India is an airline behind the times. Just think, they have no PTV's. They are horrible. What kind of airline has no PTV's? Sheesh. Will Air India ever fall off the Flinstones wagon?

Hey Industrialpate,

Dint realize 764's were also in the pipeline , wonder what the fleet is going to look like , 764's , 773's 333's, wonder which one finally comes in . Actually even I heard abt the BOM-KEF-MSP routes and I think AMD-KEF would also follow this route. The Gujrati population in KEF is definitely a force to reckon with so it definitely makes sense. And AI does have 5th freedom in KEF so it wud be able to take local's plus the Gujjus to MSP as well. Finally someone started thinking in AI. Like I said in my previous post GO AI !!  Smile

I think that MSP, and even LAS to some extent are a little far fetched. The 340 BOM-SFO route is believable though, with the giant Indian community in Northern California. That is not to say that MSP and LAS won't happen, but I would see SFO and even YVR coming before either of those two cities. Even IAH would be more probable.

Ah my 100th post , maybe i shud start a self gloss thread abt it in Non Av like all the others  Smile , or maybe not .... I think the livery would be the current one with a black radome , dont think AI is going to go back to the new livery turned old  Smile . There was some news that AI would probably change its livery for the new aircrafts which come in , obivously an exercise on the part of AI to change its look and feel. With all those routes being added plus more coming up in Africa and Europe , AI will be seen everywhere , Sean and Industrialpate , heard anything about the talks on flying to Africa ? think those would be serviced by the 310's or if they are replaced by the 333's .

I heard a rumor that Air India was trying to come into to DFW once the new terminal is open. Can any one shed any light on that.

Yeah, it was reported in the DFW Airport newsletter that the airport actually sent a delegation over to India to try and court AI. What that means is anyone's guess. However, its pretty disturbing that DFW is pulling that hard for AI--who most likely wouldn't even have daily flights. I mean, if they are trying that hard to get AI then they might have had quite a few rejections from other more prominent airlines (no offense, Sean). That being said, AI would make a decent amount of sense. Pakistan just started service to IAH and there is a decent Indian population in DFW, most whom are well-educated and earn good amounts of money in the technology sector. We'll see what happens. As we've learned from the lackies at DFW too many times, don't get your hopes up.

And more stuff coming in , with the government in India being supported by the leftists , there are moves to appease them with AI flights out of CCU. This is kind of like the flights out of PAT and GAY. Probably routes would be CCU-MOS , CCU-PEK,CCU-SHA.
With the new civil aviation minister having major stakes in the tobacco industry (he runs a huge tobacco empire) and appeasing the leftists CCU-HAV is also possible. This would be stopping at some place in between though (approx 8000 NM) Fiji (NAN) seems most likely , where AI used to operate earlier.India is one of the largest aid providers to Cuba so the flights make a lot of sense , cargo and passenger load.

Hey Sean guess what you get to really travel around the globe now. Wonder when Africa starts up  Smile

Im not surprised that DFW sent a delegation to India to court AI as DFW has lost PIA and CHINA AIRLINES to IAH-HOUSTON.

DFW having AI will be a huge boost for them though I think that IAH is more lucurative than DFW for Air India...yes or no???

AIs A 343s I feel will be used for nonstop flights to South Africa and possibly opening up AUSTRALIA.

Btw I have a question...

Q. When AI flies to EWR and JFK via CDG and LHR respectively, how many seats are allocated for INDIA-CDG + INDIA-LHR and how many for INDIA-JFK / INDIA-EWR?

Behramjee , you are absolutely correct , 343's with their range will indeed be ideal for South Africa and Australia. Actually with talks about the 764's , 333's and the 773's going ard , this will be a good possibility in the near future. Flights to Australia would halt in Singapore while South Africa would be connected non stop from BOM. Again huge Indian population in south africa so makes a lot of sense.

LH is already flying the A340-600 to SFO from MUC?  Confused That was fast.

But getting back on topic, if AI does fly to SFO with the A340-300 my guess is that they route it DEL-SFO non-stop eastbound and SFO-ANC-DEL westbound.

No way. AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA is the designated hub of AI in Europe. Need for connectivity there. It is still long to go, but I think the flight would rather start in the South of India 'to connect both Silicon Valleys'. The 2 yr old rumour with BLR-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA-SFO could become reality, since point-to-poing from smaller gateways like BLR, HYD etc is a fast growing market

Where will the Air India flight to Los Angeles stop enroute? And will it originate in Delhi, or Mumbai?

The route is BOM-Fra-LAX, 3/7, to be increased (oct?) 5/7, planned April next year 7/7. In Fra, there is the possibility to connect coming from DEL with AI 165 and travel to LAX, Coming back from LAX, connection to the LH codeshare AI6760 is given. Hence, Fra is a small 'minihub' for AI!  Smile

To be increased in future

By the way: is it possible to come from LAX (or ORD) and then connect on the AI codeshare with AF to CDG?? Then AI would offer more flights US-France (albeit indirectly...)  Smile

Air India to DFW???? Get real!!!

Please, the stupid bureacrats who run the airport can't even get KLM or AF for crying out loud!!

They have to be the lamest bureacrats around...think about it...they have a huge, modern airport in the middle of the country and a metro population of 5.5 million and they have shXX except for BA, LH, and 3x week Korean.

If they want to lure AI or anybody else, they need to fire everyone and go down to IAH and see how its done!!

AI will come to IAH before DFW gets even one more foreign carrier.

Losers!!

Do you have a more specific source regarding the BOM-CPH-LAS rumour?

This will never, ever happen, don't worry...

Maybe I am missing something important, but why would AI want to fly to LAS? Is there a major Indian population there? I could see virtually anywhere else but LAS.

The statements made were not meant to be serious but were supposed to point out the baseless and unlikely rumour of some people here (f.i. AI soon to DFW) in adding another one.

Mrniji - I think you're right on this one  Wink/being sarcastic

Anyway I see a potential for a route between India and Copenhagen. Until right after 9/11 SAS was operating CPH-DEL with A340 - good loads but to low yield...

Yes, I took that flight (B767), it was one of the best options because it had a day time arrival and also had good rates, and last but not least is a very good airline.
I think there is a potential in virtually every city from India (must not be the biggest aircraft)!

"CPH-LAS route would be flown by 773's/333's

Come on now, if you are going to lie, do it correctly. It has to be an A330-200, not A330-300!"

AFAIK, AI's hub of choice for transatlantic flights is going to be AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA and not CPH!

and AFAIK, AI is going in for A340-300s and not the 777 or the A330-300 or the A330-200.

Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience.
