Monarch Flights To Newark

Wed May 26, 2004 9:37 pm

Wondering if anyone remembers Monarch flying to Newark. I remember seeing the route in an old in-flight magazine. Also remember seeing the airline name on the terminal shuttle at EWR.

Can anyone advise what they used, and why they flew the route. What caused them to pull out?

757s operating cruise charters I think, for Rennaisance Cruises. I believe the company went bust
Think they operated ATH-LGW-EWR or something like that

I remember seeing Monarch A300-600's on the ramp at EWR on a few occasions.
Direct KNOBS, maintain 2700' until established on the localizer, cleared ILS runway 26 left approach.

Cruise charters - of course!

Might have twigged if it was JFK, just didnt think EWR for cruise, but why not?

Thanks

For 2 consecutive winter seasons Monarch had a contract to fly cruise ship passengers between Newark and Athens . This involved a technical stop at London gatwick for Refuelling and a crew change . Usually flown by Boeing 757's. G-MONE was painted in Renaissence colours
If you have got the book Boeing 757 and 767 by Robbie Shaw published by osprey civil aircraft there are photos on page 31

Hi

Monarch operated from 1994 - 2000 on behalf of Renaissance Cruises inc from New York (initially EWR, later years JFK) to Nairobi and The Seychelles.

Full routing was JFK-MAN-LXR-NBO-SEZ-LXR-MAN-JFK. In the early years the aircraft went via ATH instead of LXR. Also the A300 operated for part of the first year.

Initially the aircraft operated in Monarch colours, then G-MONE was repainted into this livery (with renaissance titles)

then in the last year of operation it flew in this eye catching livery which I am rather proud of since I designed it!

Having flown the short hop LGW-IBZ-LGW on one of Monarch's A300's last year, the thought of flying one of the routings mentioned above sends shivers through me. It was the most uncomfortable, cramped flight I have ever had. You'd have needed a two week cruise just to get your body working again!! Maybe the configuration was different then?

sorry I forgot to mention the config

6 First class (55 inch seat pitch)
60 Business (45 inch seat pitch)
48 Economy (35 inch seat pitch)

total 114 seats, which was the number of births on the Renaissance ships (which are the ships now being lined up for easycruise but not in not such an attractive fit out)

I believe there was a Monarch 757 at EWR only a few weeks back, but apart from that, I can only remember the previously mentioned A300s from a few years back.
