To SFO On BA Or LH?

Thu May 27, 2004 3:32 am

2 questions.

I'm probably going to SFO in September. If I go with LH I go through Munich and end up on the A346 and with BA on the 744, correct? Never been on the A346, is it worth giving up IFE (I get bored in long flights so IFE is a concern) to fly on that bird? I'm also a member of SAS frequent flyer program so I will get points on LH. But BA is 550 Euro compared to LH 620 Euro.

Second question: Concerning the flightpatterns over SFO. On which side of the aircraft should I book to get the best view over the beautiful city? I know the patterns change from time to time but on which side do I have the best chance?

Any help would be great.

Mischa.

For great IFE fly BA. But if you like collecting souveniers like postcards, playing cards, etc. fly LH. I personally prefer BA 744 over LH 340's. I like BA much better than LH, but LH does provide some cool souveniers that are inrresitable. The choice is entirely upto you.

Just my two cents.....................

I've never flown BA, but I have flown on LH. This was a while ago, however, so I'm not a very good source regarding which airline to choose.

However, I can help you regarding the flight patterns at SFO. We have four runways, and it looks like a tic tac toe board (2 sets of parallel runways that intersect). Most flights land on 28L or 28 R. In this case, your best views are usually on the right side of the airplane. You'll get some nice views of the city, the bridges and most of the Bay Area.

On your return flight, I would sit on the left side of the plane. Most flights take off on runways 1L or 1R. You get a spectacular view of the city, and even part of the coastline. This view is one of my favourites in the world from an airplane.

So, make sure you sit on the right side for the flight to SFO, and then the left side for the flight back to Europe.

Thanks a lot for the answer UA744KSFO  Smile

Now if only some one could tell me if I should sacrifice a cheaper ticket and PTV just to fly on an A340-600 and some frequent flyer points.

i have flown both BA and LH from SFO-LHR/AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. I would pick BA in a heartbeat over LH.

UA744SFO...your point are good except your side of the plane is wrong. On inbound you want to be on the left side. The flight path takes you direct Point Reyes VOR to SFO VOR. Downtown will be on the left side of the plane. You will also get to see OAK.

On departure you want to be on the right side. BA almost always and LH always use 28L/R for departure and head west to the coast, then turn northbound till they are abeam the AF Airlines (Argentina)">SF and then turn right direct Linden VOR.

The only exceptions to these are that when BA is light they will use 1R for departure. Saves taxi time and fuel from where they park. On arrival you always arrive from the north over PT. Reyes but if ATC brings you down the pennisula for 28L you will fly direct over the airport. Either was down the bay or penninsula you will still have downtown on the left. Its a great view. I sat on that side when coming home on AF from Paris and it was very nice to see AF Airlines (Argentina)">SF. Made me feel I was really at home.

I have flown the MUC-SFO flight on LH 340s, great flight. Lots of food and alcohol if you like that. The plane is great, amazingly quiet.

Agree going into SFO, I like the left side of the plane, great view of San Jose and the Penninsula landing through the east-approach to SFO. Departing the right side is great, especially if taking off over the airport. Not sure if they use the normal take-off in which case both sides are great but again, the left might see more of San Francisco.

Have a great trip!

I liked the seats on BA 744's, they were SO much better than LH. But LH has better quality/quantity of food.

P.S. I wouldn't mind flying a LH 744 as I haven't done so in last few years  Smile
