TLC Becoming CatIII(b)

Thu May 27, 2004 7:13 am

The government of the State of Mexico will soon be recieving TLC airport from Aeropuertos y Servicios Auxiliares (ASA, current airport operator). I've heard TLC will soon start maintenance in the 15 edge of its 15-33 runway. For this purpose, the threshold will be reduced in about 1000m for a few months.

Eventually, the runway will be broadened by 9 meters (30Ft), and the 15 edge will receive an additional 169 meters (554Ft) of runway lenght. This will make TLC the longest runway in Latin America, with 4369 meters (14324 Ft). ACN will be increased to 56. Center lights will be added to the rwy.

Also, the current Alfa taxiway will be made to stretch all along the runway, and broadened to 23 metres (75Ft).

All of the above are works related to upgrading TLC to becoming a CatIII(b) airport. The money will be coming from the arks of the State government.

Does anybody here have additional info with regard to this?

The improvements being made at TLC should help the authorities in the D.F. area to get airlines flying to alterate airports such as TLC, PBC, CVJ and QRO. Continental Express begins non-stop service between Toluca and Houston on 10 June.

I happen to be a very good friend of the main partner of the firm that won the bidding process and is installing the CATIII(b) equipment in TLC. I will contact him and see what else can I find out. His firm specializes in airport development and infrastructure and he is very active in this area in Mexico, so I'll try to get info on TLC as well as other airports. Last thing he told me is that a project is supposed to start soon for the lengthening of the runway at Palenque, but being a very complicated thing to acheive "conventionally" because of geographic conditions, some innovative ideas are popping out. . .le't just say that I suggested he took a look at the hundreds of pictures of Funchal/Madeira on this site. . .

Considering the fact that CO is about to start flying to TLC (or has started already, don't really know), does anyone know if any of their ERJ's are equipped for Cat III landings?

Saludos.

JoseMex,

That's a good question the one you made. Also if MX or any other airline wants to start flights into TLC they'll have to train their pilots for CATIII landings.

Government will invest usd 17m on TLC terminal. They'll built new taxiways, they'll extend the apron and a put the so annunced CATIII-B.

Update: according to NOTAM, TLC's threshold on Rwy 15-33 will only be reduced 300 meters, instead of the 1000 meters originally planned.

Even though it's a long runway, 1000 meters sounded like a lot to me.

I was all excited 'cause I was flying TLC-IAH on CO next week (my first commercial flight out of TLC), but I had to change it to a MEX-SAT.

Any idea on how convenient/safe is overnight parking there? How about ground transportation (taxis)?
