Meet At DCA & IAD For Saturday 7/31

Thu May 27, 2004 10:51 am

We are arranging a full day meet-up in the DC area on Saturday 7/31 (this date and time are subject to change. Follow the thread closely to verify any changes).

The tentative plan is to start at DCA around 11:00am. Then in the early afternoon, drive over to the Steven Udvar-Hazy museum at IAD for a quick visit to the Concorde and Dash 80. Then we will be in place to view the bank of IAD's international arrivals from 3:30pm through 5:30pm.

All those who are interested should let us know here. Closer to the actual date, we'll exchange contact information (cell phone numbers) so we can find each other throughout the day of the meet.

Let's make this a big one! Looking forward to seeing all of you soon!

Count me in, was reading about this on the PHL meet thread and thought it sounded like fun. The itinerary sounds great and I'm sure we will all have a blast. As Curt said hopefully a lot of people will come.

Count me in. I'll give I-Air a try. Can't beat $75RT to IAD. It will be great to meet more of the a.netters.

Hope this turns out to be a good meet..

The group could take a short I-Air flight at IAD the same afternoon--say, to MDT and back. They'd qualify for a group rate. Maybe lunch or dinner at the T J Fridays which overlooks IAD's active taxiways under its control tower.

Sounds like an interesting afternoon. If the group is going from DCA to IAD in a convoy, then maybe they would qualify for a National Park Service motorcycle escort.  Smile

I'm VERY envious...sounds like a lot of fun, and I would do it in an instant...only problem is I live north of Seattle. Dulles is my favorite airport and I always fly through there when I get the chance. I'll be passing through on 7/3 on UA916 on my way to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. I'm hoping I get rerouted via IAD on my way home from LHR.

Have fun! I'd like to see that museum one of these days as well, at least I have a Concorde (G-BOAG, which I saw arrive on 11/5/03) a mere 25 miles away...

And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

Curt, This is fabulous. I am all for it. PHL meet was a blast and this sounds even better. The date also is perfect for me. As the date nears, I will be in touch with the rest of the gang, so that I can drive down to PHL and hitch a ride on the minivan. I would not mind driving down to Washington either if we want to take my car.

Dave, I-air sounds a great idea. But i think you will enjoy going by road with the group a lot more.

cheers

Concord977 (& PHLApproach),

I just e-mailed you guys. Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to go. Unlike the other PHL A.netters, I have more open Saturdays in June than I do in July; but we shall see. As I stated in my last e-mail, I will keep you posted.

Regards,  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
Chris

P.S. Although I worked on a couple of airfield projects over IAD, I've never been out there. The last time I was at DCA was in June of '96. My company toured the new Terminal B-C before it opened; we were heavily involved on the design end for the sitework, connecting roadways and utilities for that terminal. I have some photos from that trip. I'll bring them along.

Concord977,

11:00am is too early for picture taking at DCA. You will have the sun in front of you. Of course if you want to meet in the terminal thats fine, but Gravelly Point is out of picture for 11.
Second thing. All Int'l arrivals start coming to IAD at 1:20pm. I have no idea how you want to split those two airports. If the winds are from the south then DCA is perfect but IAD is out. If the winds are from the north then DCA is out and IAD is good.
Mind if I suggest that would be better to start day at IAD's daily parking garage around 8am to get LAB 767, Saudi 777 (they will be using 777 by the time of the meeting), Korean 747 or 777 and ANA 777. When you are on the top of daily parking garage in the morning you don't have to worry about wind condition. You will get clear view of arrivals/departures from 1L/19R. And around 11:30am we can head over to DCA (if they are landing on 19), if they are using runway 1 at DCA then we can just drive over to UH for Int'l arrivals.
You can't really do both airports in one day. You will have to choose between many arrivals.
I am up for the meeting, but only for one airport at the time.

Take care,
Rafal

Lindy/Rafal,

We're open to suggestions up until the actual day of the meet!

I will say that 11:00am is just fine at Gravelly Point if planes are arriving TO the south. The sun's path is not directly overhead, it is somewhat to the southwest of the park. (I was out there yesterday). If you are standing near the boat ramp, the arriving aircraft are well lit for photos. Check out some of Andrew Morrell's photos for this vantage point.

We had a meet on April 23rd (much smaller group) and did the itinerary mentioned at the thread's beginning. It is possible to hit both airports if we don't waste too much time in the museum. A large number of people are coming from out of town - so we'll need to fit in as much as is possible.

DCA is great because you are so close to the aircraft. IAD is great because of the variety of types and carriers.

I appreciate your suggestions. Everyone will be free to follow whatever schedule they want. We just hope to meet up with many other a.netters along the way!

Take care,
Curt

Curt -

Provided that I have the weekend free, I'm up for a road trip to DC...and perhaps I can convince some other NY'ers to tag along. As for the proposed itinerary, I don't care where we go as long as we're looking at airplanes in good lighting conditions (read: better conditions than last time)!

Curt,

I know that both airports can be done in one day (I did 3 once ), but some people wont be able to commute between those two airports. I think that it would be better to set aside one day for one airport. We can boil on the asfalt parking lot at UH museum or we can camp next to the Potomac river  Smile

Getting more time in at DCA would be nice, but I don't think any of us Philly natives feel like getting up at 5 AM to trek down there. For the New Yorkers (Jakbar and company) it would be even earlier.

I don't mind making the UH brief, since all I really want to see are Concorde, the Dash 80, and maybe the Shuttle Enterprise (I'm not really a vintage aircraft kind of guy). That said, I would incredibly enjoy watching tons of heavy iron I would only dream of seeing up here at PHL. Maybe I can upload some shots that aren't taken at PHL for a change!

Sounds like July 31 is starting to become more definate as the date. I'll contact a UA 737 Captain I know before hand and see if he wants to come and meet us at IAD.

I think its safe to say you can count me in. I think I may be the only one coming from the south, if not, I have room for 1. As for travelling between the both, I think its safe to say we will have enough space for all. Maybe those with big cars / vans can do the car pooling as the fee to get into the Museum is based on parking - $12 a car if I remember right. The more people we can fit into one car, the better for everyone. Hope to see all you there!

Maybe lunch or dinner at the T J Fridays which overlooks IAD's active taxiways under its control tower.

Is that beyond security, or can you get to it without a plane ticket.

The one I'm thinking about is in the D concourse...and yes, beyond the security checkpoint, so you'd have to have a boarding pass. Cool place...I ate there while waiting for my flight to BOS last summer.

Bryguy

That's something we still need to workout. I'm still not positive that Mike will have permission (he hasn't given me a definite 'yes' yet). Once we know who all is going, I think we'll be able to plan it from there. I'm going to have to drive over the bridge to Pennsy anyways, so if Mike is going, I can pick him up on the way over. As far as everyone else (you all live in Pennsy for the most part).. It's up for discussion. I can't really see us meeting at the airport or any place else that people will have to pay for parking. We could meet at 1 persons house (if that's ok), so people can be dropped off or be able to park on the street w/out having to pay. Hopefully something along those lines. As far as I know now, our van will have:
Me
You
Ed
Joe
Mike
Vic or Vik
and maybe someone else? I forget.. You get the idea though. We're already pretty booked  Smile

cheers

I may be up for it.

I'm in NJ close to BLM, if there's enough of us we could hire a mini-van.

We could leave early and do a drive through at TTN and PHL on the way! Why don't we all make a weekend of it? I'm sure I could negotiate a decent rate at the Hyatt in Crystal City with airport view rooms overlooking DCA.

Let me know what everyone thinks!

Well, I will be coming in on a Comair CRJ from DFW to DCA that day so maybe keep an eye out for my landing although I think it is at night. In any case, I will post a trip report when I am done with my travels. I look forward to being on a CRJ for that long as I am quite curious as to what it will be like.

BigOrange, Several of the people planning to come are 'under-age'. It is doubtful that their parents will want them making an overnight trip, even though they will be driving down with adults.

But for any adults making a trip the Hyatt or the Marriott are good locations to consider.

We'll concentrate the acitivities on 7/31 for the majority of folks coming. If anyone wants to add a day before or after, no problem.

Wow, looks like there are going to be a crap load of people coming. Should be a real crazy party.

For any of the PHLers here, I was just at Citizen's Bank Park watching the Phillies blow a 3-0 lead. The best part was watching several US Dash 8s fly directly over the park, along with BAW 69 over on the 27R final.

From what I heard in the news, an American Eagle ERJ flight bound for BOS was stopped and searched. Nothing was found but the flight was cancelled.

A similar incident happenned with an AA flight in BOS bound for London. That flight was also searched. Again nothing turned up; however, that flight was ultimately allowed to proceed.

Yes, it was a AA flight (43) the captain decided not to stay near the terminals, so they tugged it out into the field near 27R I believe and they searched it with the K-9's, found nothing. Another AA flight BOS - LHR (772) was searched also, they too found nothing. The BOS - LHR flight left about an hour late.

I think it was a disgruntled employee that made the threats. An American FA was arrested after placing a note saying there was a bomb on board in the lav. That was like last week I believe.

Joe, I saw 69 last night also (tried to get a pic, he tracked to far west of me and therefore the sun was on the other side of him, maybe tonight I'll get a photo off tonight). Listened to him from first contact to Philly App North all the way up to Clearance by Tower for a 27R ILS, he sounded quite young. I'm guessing of course the FO was doing communications.

I wanted to mention that maybe everyone could drive to Mike's (still have not heard anything from him, I'll ask him) or Ryan's possibly (although he lives a bit deep into NJ territory) not even saying it's ok for the PHL guys that are riding in the "Windstar" to park their cars at either houses to avoid paying tons of money or so to park at PHL. I would also like to add I'm thinking this is a rain or shine event. I have a feeling that the 31st of July will be a nice day, and in the summer you normally get those "Florida Showers" you know the real quick stuff then the sun is right out again. Another thought was that Vik was to drive down to Philly and maybe take 202 to my house (202 was quicker for him on the way back) pick me up then we would drive down to Mike's house or whomever's house to catch a ride in the "Windstar". But I guess since Vik is driving down with some of the EWR and NJ guys that I can get a ride to the house where the van will be.

Anyone want to add anything?

Ed..

My place would be fine with me. I don't live that deep into Jersey. I'm probably 10 or 15 minutes from the Burlington Bristol Bridge. I live in a complex, so parking is not an issue.. I just figured we'd all meet over the bridge, since we'd have to cross it eventually anyway... It's up to you guys.
