SAS: Will They Ever Come To SFO Like Planned?

Fri May 28, 2004 4:28 am

Pre 9-11 it was my understanding that SAS planned to serve SFO. Am I correct? If so, have they considered it of late to go through with it and start SFO-CPH? SFO seems to be doing a good job at pulling in some new carriers. EK,VN, maybe Air India, things are looking brighter!

Yes you are correct. SK was planning SFO ops for May 2004 pre 9/11. According to my source, SFO is still on the table, but service not likely before 2006.
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

SAS will probably start service to SFO, but I've heard that they don't have any a/c to fly that route......yet.......

I think SAS want to open a lot of new destinations. I think SFO is still on consideration, but they have just started the Shanghai route and I suppose they need some new a/c. Lindegaard CEO said earlier they want start new longhaul, but I assume the competition is from Scandinavia to the Far East at this moment.
Just my thought

PS. Because of the competition to the Far East from Finnair, maybe SAS should look to the Far West  Wink/being sarcastic like SFO, just my second thought

Yeah I think that they should focus on that too!

Too many Scandinavians fly to SFO/LAX for flights to the Pacific and South America and the US of course  Smile

They fly via EDDF or EGLL so I think this has potential, maybe more LAX than SFO, but again SFO is going to see many new airlines soon so maybe that WILL be it?

Copenhagen Boy- I believe EDFF and EGLL are LHR and LGW. I sure hope to see SK start SFO ops in the near future, that would be really cool.

I would also love to see SK fly to SFO. And hopefully that will happen sooner or later. And since they have cut down on the Bangkok route, maybe they could use some of the resources and equipment from that cutdown and use it on the SFO route.. THey don't have to fly everyday. 4 days a week would be good and Im sure that would be profitable..

Those are not viable connections. SFO has no service to South America, and LAX has only eleven weekly flights (7 to Lima and 4 to Sao Paulo) to the region. The only US connections are to a limited cache area on the west coast. Most Pacific connections (as in mainland) are done going the other direction, while traffic between Scandanavia and Pacific Islands would probably fill a good 10 seats or less on a CPH-SFO flight. The main advantages are the SFO to Europe connections the flight would provide, as well as some of the smaller West coast communities. I do think SAS would do well on a CPH-SFO, though I've heard they don't plan on a new North American destination until 2006 at the earliest, and that when they launch it, it will be in the Eastern half of the continent.

SFO is in the plans when SAS does expand it's intercontinental network. It might be replaced by LAX when that happens. Some flights to Asian destinations are planned from ARN from 2005+.This will mean the acquisition of an additional A340 and this plane might also provide the additional capacity for a 2- or 3-times per week service to the U.S. West Coast.

However,no firm decisions,yet.

One would think United could make a SFO-CPH flight work, instead of waiting for SK to hurry up and operate the route. I mean, it provides good connections for Star Alliance traffic, with CPH being a good sized hub, and a fine alternative to AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA or LHR. It would spice things up in CPH spotting  Smile
