Severe WX Has DFW Backed Up (1744 CST)

Fri May 28, 2004 9:46 am

Turns out the arrivals are all holding due to severe weather in the DFW area. This is what they look like right now (click to enlarge).

Red is DFW arrivals
Green is DFW departures
Orange is DAL arrivals
Blue is DAL departures

Looks like they blew a few departures out at the last minute - especially to the east.

Updated shots to follow.

Looks like they blew one departure out of DFW (the AA to RDU) Notice the northbound flow, though.

I was just watching The Weather Channel and there are many storms around Cincinnati, Dayton, Indianapolis, Columbus etc. that look much worse than those in Texas.....don't get me wrong, I realize that DFW gets hammered quite often, but tonight the midwest seems to be getting the worst of it......

TWC is also reporting that this weekend....Saturday and Sunday.....a huge area of the central part of the country, including Texas, Oklahoma, St. Louis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Chicago, Indianapolis....will, not could, will... see the worst severe weather outbreak of the year.

Yeah, I just happened to see the DFW flow from a different thread where I was going to show someone what their usual patterns were. They are going to be hammered there for a LONG time tonight becuase of this. Each data point on here is 5 minutes. This shows the next 4 hours.

Whoa! Those can't all be diversions to IAH, are they?

Third wave of storms is coming through the Metroplex now, and hopefully, this will be it for awhile...

I've been trying to watch the History Channel special on AA191/ORD, and every time it gets to a part I really want to see, a cell gets in front of my Dish Network antenna and blocks the signal from their satellite, so poof, no picture or sound....

Oh well, maybe on the repeat later tonight...

Never mind... they aren't going to IAH - they aren't descending... they are just trying to find some out of the way sky for those guys! Some serious holding patterns near DFW, though!

They've started unravelling the NW holds. It would be a helluva time to be spotting at DFW right now... they are going to bring them in as close as possible!

Where do you find out which airports flights may be diverted to?

You don't, because that's an ongoing process that gets updated minute-by-minute between dispatchers, captains and ATC. AA's "morning after" report...

41-RFLD/RTND, 02-RON.

Wish I had been able to stick around and show the unravelling of the hold patterns... I was even thinking of recording and AVI file of it - but I had a disk removed (C5-C6) on Monday and things are a bit touch and go as far as my lucidity!  Sleepy

I tried downloading Flight Explorer, but for some reason, my computer (or ISP)won't do it. I can't figure it out....

I work at Waco approach and worked last night.

We had 10 GA type props along with a Falcon 50 and a BE40 divert from the Dallas terminal area.

We also had an AA MD80 come in from LAX that declared min fuel.

All in all I think the ground stop lasted at least 2 hours.

Lots of fun.

I was working last night in all the mess and we didn't really get back to normal till around 115am. I know we had a couple of people call on the noise line because ATC was using 31R and 35R after 10.

Well, I was one of the unfortunate folks to get caught up in last night's weather backups at DFW. I was on DL 1181 from BOS to DFW and we ended up diverting to OKC after holding for close to an hour. We landed at OKC just before 2100 and were there for about two hours while refueling and waiting for DFW to open up again after the second set of cells came through. We left OKC around 2300, made it to the gate at around 2355. I hauled serious butt from E12 to the E satellite to make it to the also-delayed flight to HOU (my flight to IAH had left a few minutes before). But at least I made it into Houston only 3 hours or so late. It wouldn't have been fun to get stuck at DFW overnight, especially with Friday being a heavy travel day.

There had to have been quite a few folks sleeping in the terminal last night.

As said, welcome to summer. I was working at STL Thursday and I have never seen it rain so hard. ABX had a plane get pushed about 12 inches from the wind gusts and I was out in the middle of it securing a Lear that was about to hit out buliding because it was weathervaining. We've had all kinds of diversions here over the past two weeks as the result of weather in other places and I'm sure they've gotten a few from us as well.

My questions is: Do you monitor this stuff all day? Or do you just look at interesting (i.e. bad weather) situations?

Just curious.

Nah... I was originally responding to a post about the normal traffic patterns at DFW. I was hoping to get a good screen of what they were doing that evening... I didn't even know they had weather. When I noticed the arrivals were holding, I looked at the weather down there. I thought it would be cool to point it out in a new thread.

A lot of times I am just curious about what is going on where and I open up Flight Explorer - other times I see something on here that gets me thinking (like the power outage at DEN last week where I posted a whole sequence of what was going on - very cool!).
