US Airways Exp. To Stop PIT-RDG Service In Sept.

Fri May 28, 2004 10:58 am

US Airways Express will discontinue PIT-RDG service come Sept. 1st, 2004 due to poor flight scheduling and poor passenger loads. This will be a huge loss of business for the Reading Airport and may spell the end for it. Back in 1998 US Airways Express ran 14 daily flights from RDG to PIT, PHL, BWI and BOS but due to the Sept 11 attacks service was drastically cut and even after strong passenger complaints to US Airways to bring back the flights most of the RDG service was never reinstated and the service that was kept was downgraded to Beech 1900 aircraft insted of keeping the DASH-8 and Dornier 328's that had been previously used on some of the routes. US Airways Express will start service from LNS to PIT in OCT of 2004. The service will be provided by Mesa/Air Midwest using Beech 1900's 4 times a day, but according to the LNS airport authority the main goal is to have RJ service from US Airways Express/Mesa to several destinations by mid 2005. LNS is in the process of lengthening its runways to accomadate the RJ's preformance needs.

Whatever happened to that rumor you mentioned awhile back about NW Airlink starting service to DTW from RDG?

Also isn't the PIT service cuts a direct result of the pull-down of US's hub?

The NW deal was true, I saw the paperwork on it but apparently the revenue gaurentee numbers that they wanted didn't work out so it was scrapped. I believe that may be true about the PIT cuts, but I don't see how they can claim poor pax loads. Most of the flights to and from RDG are 17 and higher. True the schedule is not the best but I don't see their logic in this.

At only 224 miles, RDG-PIT is probably not a significant O&D market, so these flights primarily provide feed. Thus, PSU.DTW.SCE is absolutely correct: these cuts are the direct result of the reduction in connecting opportunities in PIT.

Interesting. Several of the options Mesa/Air Midwest provided in its EAS application for LNS involved one-stop service to PIT via RDG. (Incidentally, the DOT decided on 3 non-stop daily flights for the PIT-LNS service, and not 4 as LNS was hoping for.)

Get in line to cry about it. With PIT going to a focus city, there a lot of communities that will have no air service in the near future. The PIT closure and the war in PHL will start to have casualties and they are the B1900 communities.

That's a shame. I flew through RDG in Feb '03....on my B1900 flight from PHL, there were a total of four people on board...myself, one passenger (looked to be a non-rev), and the flight crew. Great though, since they left the door open up front  Big thumbs up

It's a great airport...there's nothing like flying through an airport with extremely limited airline service. It's a great experience.

I think this would be happening even without the PIT downgrade. If it ain't EAS, Mesa doesn't want anything to do with it. They just can't make money with the 19-seaters anymore.

I thought the DOT approved up to 5 LNS-PIT routes/day. I also heard rumor about the classic PIT-RDG-LNS-PIT or the other way around.

Nope.

Mesa gave 5 options:
Option 1: 4x LNS-PIT + 1x LNS-RDG-PIT
Option 2: 3x LNS-PIT + 1x LNS-RDG-PIT
Option 3: 3x LNS-PIT
Option 4: 3x LNS-RDG-PIT
Option 5: 4x LNS-PIT
Mesa's filing is at http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf89/280455_web.pdf.

The city of Lancaster wanted Option 1 or Option 5.

The DOT chose Option 3. The DOT filing is at http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf89/282058_web.pdf.

The Lancaster Air-Service task force wanted option 4. I was still hoping (for the benefit on Lancaster) that DCI would feed something into LNS. But they pulled out of the runnings for the EAS money.

No, they didn't.

As I said, they wanted Option 1 or Option 5.

What the Task Force wanted and what they were forced to put on paper is 2 different issues. If anyone knows the most about this on this board it would be me. My last post should have said option 5 plus one. I have to learn i cant post on here after an IROP night. BTW press release should be coming out soon for LNS-PIT starting late JUL early AUG depending on aircraft availabilty. As of yesterday LNS is still inactive in any RES system.

Im sorry it was option 5 plus one more flight. I have to learn i can't post on here after an IROP night! I have the docs too if you would like to see.

No, it was not.

Quoting from the above linked document at http://dmses.dot.gov/docimages/pdf89/280454_web.pdf:

"The Lancaster Airport Authority and the Lancaster Air Service Task Force respectfully requests that the DOT choose “Option 1, five round trip, four non stops and one one-stop, or “Option 5”, four round trip non-stop flights."

I'm through arguing with you now. Good day.

All I can say is BUMMER! That really sucks!

Freshlove, I hope they're giving you an option to move to LNS or another station. PM me and let me know what's going on.

That's a real bummer. I really enjoyed flying into RDG when the schedules permitted and the fares were semi-reasonable. They renovated the airport a number of years ago and let it go to waste. Thanks, AD.

I hope someone picks up the service into RDG - I wouldn't mind flying into PHL, perhaps even ORD or AD / KIAD), USA - Virginia">IAD  Smile Riiiight... hehe. I really do hope someone picks the service back up nonetheless.

What are they going to do with the charter service?
