I was wondering if anyone had a chance to read the article in yesterday's Wall Street Journal on the construction of the A380? It actually focuses on the problems associated with cunstructing the A380 and what Airbus is doing to rectify the problems. It's been well known for a while that the weight has been an issue for Airbus when dealing with the A380, but the article goes into detail with the many different techniques that are being used into the A380 program, some of it in my opinion quite revolutionary or gutsy in other people's minds. It also underlines the importance of team work and the necessity for all contributors in this project to work together. The article illustrates the frustrations that go within manufactures, one being underlined by disagreements with Spanish distributors with the English. The disagreement was resolved but the issue revolving around the very tight schedule for the cunstruction of the A380 is no doubt putting stress on everyone involved in the project.
The article truly allows us in the outside world to better understand what is truly involved in building a new aircraft. One last thing that was mentioned was a small paragraph at the end of the article which may answer some folks questions as to why Virgin has delayed it's deliveries for the A380. Though not truly descriptive, it points out that Virgin simply does not want to be involved in operating an all new aircraft during it's first months of operations. Contrary to what people believe, it's quite a bit of a burden for an airline to be the launch customer for a new aircraft or a new variant. During the first year of operations is when the teething problems will exist, and may pose problems for on-time performance for airlines. It's a really interesting article that everyone should read. It really talks about the "blood and guts" that are put into building this aircraft. hey, no one ever said that building an aircraft is easy, certainly not the largest one at that!
