Breaking News Plane Crashes In Chicago Suburb

Sat May 29, 2004 6:08 am

Just heard about a plane crash in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago. They say that the Cessna plane took off from MDW and later on called the tower about engine problems.

I'm afraid that I don't see the logic there. If an aircraft has engine problems on (or or shortly after) takeoff, what airport he took off from is really immaterial. He could have just as easily had engine problems after taking off from Meigs....

His Honor the Mayor attacked the airport in an overnight raid back in 2003...or was it 2002?

Meigs wouldn't of helped, guys this plane crashed Southwest of Midway in Homer township, near lockport, KLOT. Meigs is Northeast of Midway, opposite directions.

In an illegal move, Mayor Daly and City of Chicago roadway personnel took heavy equipment and destroyed the runway at Meigs in the dead of night, stranding millions of dollars worth of aircraft and endangering the lives of people that may have attempted to approach the airport unaware.

Hence, raid.

Guys, what I meant was no one on the ground would have been affected by a Cessna going down if he had taken off from Meigs. SW Chicago is so densely populated. In other words, by closing Meigs, Daley pushes more traffic to Midway, which is tight as it is. See my logic?

OPNLguy has started correctly it was a 'RAID'..!! The mayors wrecking crews showed up at midnight, unannounced and without prior warning or notification to the FAA and destroyed the runway.

BOT- The plane was some sort of small Cessna- I've heard both four and six seats; the information is still preliminary. WBBM is reporting 2 fatalities. It looks like a detached garage at a home in 139th street got destroyed, but no one is reporting any ground casualties. If I find a link that you guys can access, I'll post it. If a pilot with engine trouble was aiming for Meigs, the potential for casualties on the ground when he didn't make it would have been much higher. I completely disagree with 757/767- Meigs was not the airport to shoot for when you were unsure whether you would make it (and as already noted, this accident was in Will County anyway).

He did it because he "believed" that Meigs posed a threat to nearby downtown Chicago.

I'd think that the 744s, MD-11s, and 777s frequenting ORD would be more of a threat than someone's GIV.

Scottish Laddie,

Mayor Daly is still the Mayor of Chicago...amazing as that sounds...The planes that were stuck there were allowed to take off on the taxiways to get out of the airport...Think I heard some 42 or so light planes were stranded initially.

This sounds pretty amazing... And I feel close to it, both because I fly a Cessna 182RG, and because I remember how much I loved landing (a very difficult landing) in Meigs Field, and the awesome views of downtown Chicago at dawn, when taking off the next morning.

But I do remember (in that difficult landing) how glad was I that there were no houses under me, but just water.

Even if the Mayor thought it was a "threat" that is not right to go in there and just use a wrecking ball without any notice. And how the hell is he still mayor?

I don't want to know how this turned into a Mayor Daley Blasting post. Looks like it was a government owned plane and too bad the pilot didn't make it to the field. Some people heard the plane trying to restart several times and failed. Sad to see that happen so close.

Because he's a bleeding heart liberal, as are most of the people of Chicago, hence his reelection. To many of these liberals, Daly can do no wrong. And he'll probably be reelected again to some other post, in fact...he was on Al Gore's campaign if I recall correctly. Had Gore won, Daly would have been high up in the adminstration, probably AG...god help us that never happened...

What Daly did was illegal, but when did that ever stop a Chicago politician?  Insane

As a former Chicagoan, I have to disagree with all of this negativity about Mayor Daley. Mayor Daley is one of the greatest politicians this country has ever seen. He single handedly turned a decaying city into a hot commodity. Before Mayor Daley came into office, you could not even beg companies to relocate to Chicago; now companies like Boeing are clammoring to come to Chicago. Everytime I go to Chicago, I am amazed at the amount of construction being built in areas that just a few years ago were considered to be skid row. Finally, Mayor Daley has united a city that used to have severe racial problems into a city where people love thy neighbor. To those who dislike Mayor Daley, you are just jealous that a liberal democratic mayor can accomplish amazing things. This goes against everything Republicanism stands for.

Read the topic opener and then read reply number 30. This is how we posters get in trouble with the "CREW" if we reply to something like the above post, in itself is not offensive, but irritates someone on the board. This is just the nature of the beast. Insert a post at the sourse of the problem instead of removing it without the other contributers knowing why it was deleted. Think of it as OJT.

Micknix,

Thanks for the enlightenment, I never knew he was a saint.  Insane

Anywho, back to the topic at hand, truely sorry the people on board died. They seemed to be so close to landing safely.

Anybody find it interesting that every time a plane crashes, no matter what happens, they always mention that they didn't file a flight plan, then quickly add the required quote from the FAA guy saying "that's not uncommon."

I know that we are all familiar with aviation and this is not news to us, but how did it become expected by the general public that every aircraft file a flight plan? It just find it curious.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I hope all is OK. This wouldn't happen if Meigs were still open!

Yeah, right...Meigs being open would have prevented the airplane from coming to an abrupt rest into a garage...if Meigs was open the airplane would have had the oppotunity to execute a landing into a building, or a strip mall, maybe the convention center, or better yet into the lake. Wahtever was wrong would still have occured but the Cessna would not have hit the same garage.
If you would use logic instead of emotion...never mind

To those who dislike Mayor Daley, you are just jealous that a liberal democratic mayor can accomplish amazing things. This goes against everything Republicanism stands for.

Dude, is this an aviation post or a stump for self-righteous, blowhard apologists with a political agenda?

I think that tops the unintelligent statements of this thread. Try reading the article before commenting, it said they almost made it to a field but struck a tree, that truely sucks.

Oh, and about becoming a pilot, check the profile......

Gee you cant even show a little sympathy on this website without getting flamed.

Sorry, I am not flamed. When something goes wrong, and a flight plan is filed, someone, somewhere knows to ask questions if the flight plan is not closed. Just as a family members know to ask about someone who should have been home an hour ago. Death? I do not question it. I accept it as reality. God takes care of the good. Pilots file flight plans.

Some pilots don't file flight plans, but they tell someone what they are doing. And if that pilot's plane is missing or did not close the flight plan, then that's when the Civil Air Patrol looks for you. The DEA are still trying to find out what happened. It's really sad that this happened and to a DEA agent.

What was the motive or need for this raid?

Rather than re-hash all the details and get this particular thread any more off-topic than it already is, try a search for "meigs" and I'm sure you'll find the whole ugly story...

Actually, there is a new conspiracy theory now. The story I've heard...

Apparently Daley has always wanted a casino in Chicago, however Blagoyavich...Blagovich...Blaga....OH HELL!! I'll never spell it right...the governor of Illinois will not allow Daley to build it on the mainland. All that would have to be done is dig a trench a few feet wide to detach Meigs...oops I'm sorry...Northerly Island from the mainland and it would be considered and Island. This would allow Daley to build his precious casino on what used to be Meigs Field.

People are speculating that this was his motive all along. The park story was just a cover-up. Not sure how accurate this is but it's the rumor at the moment. Anyone else heard about this?

you surely aren't insinuating that the aforementioned humanitarian whose father was the boss of ChiTown politics for 2/3 of the 20th century and certainly passed along all his moneymaking acumen to his son would decide that gambling would be better for the city than a really good g.a. field where LifeFlight and other emergency services aircraft could be based to easily reach most of the city, as well as serve the citys real need for a close in airfield? are you?
