DL May Go 2x Daily ATL-GRU

Sat May 29, 2004 7:34 am

DL has asked the DOT for a transfer of its dormant ATL-GIG (Rio De Janeiro) frequencies to use them for a 2nd daily ATL-GRU (Sao Paulo) flight. If permitted, DL would start the 2nd daily flight around 12/1/2004.

I guess DL feels that only ATL can support more GRU service. I was kind of hoping DL might be more creative and launch JFK-GRU or FLL-GRU.

Good for Delta.

It's always good when U.S. carriers open up or re-activate international routes.

They wish they had more B777s.

I bet DL wishes they had M11s or 777s, but 2x763 ATL-GRU is better for the public.

I have lots of friends that work at DL's route authority legal counsel, Shaw Pittman... I used to live across the street from their office. Thought you'd all want to know.

That's not really surprising considering ATL's Latin American community is growing by leaps and bounds. Wish them luck!

More than Atlanta's Latin community, it is the fact that ATL is the most important hub for DL. Actually, only a small percentage of passengers come from / go to Atlanta.

It is not too surprised about DL and it is very good to get second daily from ATL-GRU.

CessnaLady: That USED to be true up until a few years ago. ATL is still DL's primary hub, but more and more Latino's are flying these days out of ATL. But, there still is connecting traffic from other areas, North Florida, South Georgia and some lower mid-west cities come to mind.  Smile

I think it's cargo that Delta is going after..more than passengers.

Interesting move - double daily to GRU. I wonder if the double-daily service will open up more or additional connection possibilities.....most flights from the US to Brazil travel overnight to take advantage of reasonal departure and arrival times, I wonder what DL has in mind.

I think this case is proof that DL has outgrown its 767-300 fleet for many international services......and with the MD11s out of service and DL making the decision not to add anymore 777s to the fleet for the near-term future (all remaining 777s on order will be sold, leased or orders cancelled), DL is stuck with operating most of its long-range flights with the 763s - which are great aircraft but small for key routes in/out of the ATL mega-hub.

I so wish they would have considered this opportunity to make a SkyTeam focused flight for this need. Going DTW-CVG-GRU-CVG-DTW one plane and one flight number on a 763. Having the flight carry NW and DL codes would be really strong.

Too bad I'm not a route planner  SmileB4

Why bother when NW can and already does send its pax on DTW-IAH/EWR-GRU, and DL can route its pax via ATL?

I was kind of hoping DL might be more creative and launch JFK-GRU or FLL-GRU.

It would be very interesting, but I think Delta just wants to play it safe. A second ATL-GRU is a sure bet. Going against JAL, AA, and Varig at JFK or trying out an FLL non-stop is much more of a risk. MIA-GRU is a huge O&D market (6 daily non-stops), but I wonder how many would take the option of FLL. I personally think CVG-GRU would be a safer bet for them than JFK/FLL-GRU.

That's not really surprising considering ATL's Latin American community is growing by leaps and bounds. Wish them luck!

It has little to do with the Atlanta areas Latin community. Firstly, Brazil is technically not in "Latin" America (it's an often debated subject, though). Secondly, rapidly growing means little in raw numbers. The Latin community is still small compared to most other major cities.

I'm thinking that the new flight might be a daylight service. Increasing aircraft usage (ATL-GRU would still have to use only two aircraft instead of four) and opening up new connecting oppurtunities.

Yeah, they need to know about DL. They did make second daily from ATL-GRU in December 2004. Besides, I am still need to know about them with more flight to Brazil flight. They are very busiest airport in the world. Is that plans to use with B777 or B767-300ER?

This is great news for DL. At this time, UA and AA are stronger than DL to Brazil so this move should put DL back in the game.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

American Airlines offers 55 flights a week into/out of Brazil from Miami, New York City, Dallas, and Asuncion, to three cities in Brazil, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Belo Horizonte. United and Delta have a long way to go to get back into the game.

MAH4546, you are right. I also don't think the Brazilian gov't would allow it. CO and DL fought vigorously over rights into the New York Area in 1996.

You are right about all the competition from JFK to Brazil. Then there is CO from EWR.

GRU-GRU is a safe bet.

I heard JL was losing a lot of passengers NRT-GRU because of that stupid new rule that forces these passengers to have visas for the US transit. Any updates on this? Is JAL going to maintain the flight via the US? I know RG dropped their NGO flights because the loads plummeted.
