KLM Ever Fly JFK-Netherlands Antilles Circa 1970?

Sat May 29, 2004 9:14 am

Hi,

My mom tells me that she went on several business trips from JFK to both Aruba and Bonaire in the early 1970's and she swears that she flew KLM on the route...did KLM ever have such a service, and if so, with what type (she thinks it was a widebody)?

I remember flying KLM DC-8's between JFK-Curacao and Aruba around 1970. We were flying down to go on a cruise out of Curacao on Chandris Cruises. I remember returning to JFK from AUA. Does anyone know if the flight crews were based in New York?

Well I remember my grandparents telling me about being on a KL flight from CUR-JFK (Probably with a stop in AUA) and one of the engines caught on fire, I think number three on a DC-10.

probably tankstop in New York and offloading passengers.
I'm pretty sure they would not have been allowed to take on passengers for the Antilles in New York because of the rule that airlines can't take on passengers in a 3rd country unless the flight returns to their homecountry which is in most treaties (however, seeing as the Antilles are in the Netherlands according to international law the flight may officially have been a flight back to the home country from New York in which case taking on passengers would have been allowed).
I wish I were flying

KLM absolutely flew between JFK and the Netherland Antillies up until the 1970s - DC8s were commonly used on these routes. Later, ALM took over these routes.

During these years, other european carriers operated flights to other destinations, usually as a continuation of their transatlantic services; for example, AirFrance flew from JFK to Guadalajara and Mexico City as a continutation of a Paris originating flight, BOAC had service from JFK to several islands in the Caribbean plus Bermuda, and the like.

I remember travelling from New York to Guadalajara as a child on Air France flight 77, a very comfortable 707.

KLM started flying to the Netherlands Antilles [Curaçao] as early as 1946, with en-route stops including Prestwick, Gander and New York [LGA]. Not sure about Aruba/Bonaire and routing in the seventies.
