What Airlines Serving Midland-Odessa TX?

Sat May 29, 2004 9:33 am

Hi folks...
I'm taking a trip to Midland-Odessa Texas in August, and I'm asking you all here as to what carriers is serving MAF? I'm flying from either LAS or PHX, and I'm willing to make connections if needed. All replies much appreciated. Regards.

As mentioned, SWA las a couple of LAS-MAF non-stops, plus connecting flights through ABQ or ELP.

SWA has no PHX-MAF non-stops, and flights are connections in either ABQ or ELP. There are a couple of flights that stop in ELP before continuing to MAF on the same aircrart and flight number...

Hope this helps...

The new Airport Terminal is great! For an Airport with 4 gates in use it is very nice! All new jetways too.

Check out the Commemorative (confederate) Air Force Museum if you get a chance

The MAF is a Joke !!
It looks like a double wide with some jetways attached to it.

Lubbock "by far" has the BEST Airport in West Texas. Much much better than its neighbors to the north (AMA) or south (MAF). Southwest runs a TON of flights into LBB. Its design reminds me of a mini DFW, yet without any terminal to terminal connections...........

MAF may be a joke now, but when CO was the main carrier there prior to deregulation, MAF and LBB had good service. In fact, CO flew B-720-024's daily from MAF to HOU/IAH and ABQ, and DC-9's Nonstop to DEN.

MAF has a brand new airport, with the same overall pax services as Lubbock, how exactly is that a joke? WN service to MAF is 14 non-stop flights a day to El Paso, Albuquerque, Las Vegas, Dallas, Austin and Houston. Lubbock has NO non-stop Southwest Service to Houston-Hobby and 13 flights a day.

The CAF museum is much better than the Silent Wings one also. Over all they are similar, with Delta having ASA-Delta connect to DFW, but the same services overall, for similar size catchment areas.

I would say ELP has the best airport in West Texas. I don't see 13 flights a day as "a ton". Must not get out much.

MAF and LBB are both exceptional airports, in terms of both terminals and service, especially considering both markets are under 300k population and are literally in the middle of nowhere.

In fact it is this remoteness that allows for such fantastic facilities and service. Drive time to the nearest big city airport is at least 4-5 hours. Other Texas markets of similar size are lucky to have a few prop flights per day to DFW or IAH, because you can drive to the big airports in about the same overall time as flying, and it's much cheaper!

I've been flying into MAF since I was a baby. When I was younger (ages 7-12), I remember only flying on jets. Then there was a period of time that WN was the only gig with jet service and everybody else was offering prop service. Now, with RJ service, are there any props flying into MAF?

In the last few years AE has replaced all of their Saab/ATR props on the MAF and LBB routes with RJs, so now it's all jets. COEX also flies all RJs. WN's 737s are the only "big jets" on those routes, however.

Same goes for AMA; but I think they have prop service from DEN.

Make fun of MAF all you want, but it is one of the richest little places on earth thanks to the oil industry. Midland was always the white collar town (a very small Dallas) and Odessa was more the blue collar (or a small Fort Worth). For what it's worth, Midland also has the Midland Hilton and Towers and has had for a number of years. Fort Worth only has one Hilton, and many other larger Texas cities don't have any at all! It's out in the middle of nowhere, but it is a classy little place.

StarCruiser,

I grew up in Abilene and still visit there several times a year. People who aren't from West Texas don't understand our way of thinking. Try to give them a break. I understand that things that seem petty to big-city folk mean a lot to us...it always pissed me off as a kid that Midland's tallest building was 4 stories taller than Abilene's, even though my town's population was 110k, way bigger than Midland or Odessa's mid 90Ks......but in the grand scheme of things the number of Hilton Hotels or 24 story buildings, or 13 daily departures, doesn't mean much to those who live elsewhere.

I'm not trying to be mean....Midland/Odessa is a great place, but there's a much bigger world out there.

BTW, the very first hotel to ever bear the Hilton name opened in downtown Abilene in 1923; the building was built by a local investment group and leased to and managed by Conrad Hilton himself. The 10-story structure is now a very nice apartment building for senior citizens.......

Don't forget the 14 story Cactus Hotel by Hilton in San Angelo  Smile

Does CO not fly anymore mainline to MAF. Many moons ago, I used to fly CO 737 to Houston. I guess it is an RJ world now.

My apologies to Capt-AWACS, I did not know MAF had a new airport.
The last time I was there was about 4 years ago and it still looked like a
double-wide on steroids with some jetways attached to it.

I'm from Lubbock and I know how West Texas people think! I almost don't really even consider El Paso part of Texas, I mean, come on, they are even on another time zone. Lets let Mexico or New Mexico have them..........

Go Tech !!

I did make a point of having an overnight trip into MAF in '95, and went back in mid 2001. The new terminal there is a VAST improvement from old one. I especially like how you can look down into ticketing/baggage claim areas from the gate areas. Nice and compact areas easy to navigate.

As it happened, in '95 is about as close as I've ever been to getting hit by lightning at a mall in Midland that evening! Armhair stood on end AFTER the flash!!

As for props into AMA, Great Lakes (ZK) operates some EM2 service to DEN for UA and F9.

I actually still in live in Lubbock and our airport is pretty good, along with our service (compared to cities our size). The only thing I could think that would make it better would be UA or F9 service to DEN. But, that is about it.

MAF is not so bad. I am always amazed by all the oil people lined up to get on flights taking them to DFW and IAH for connections to the middle east.

I remember one airline that started up out of Midland; Muse Air. Lamar Muse had some pretty fancy all first class DC 9 aircraft with leather seats. I think their TV ads were done with spokes-woman Mamie Van Doren, a long ago forgotten, blonde bombshell type actress from out of the Mansfield/Monroe era. Everybody used to say, "Who the hell is Mamie Van Doren?" Us old geezers know...wink, wink...

As a former Lubbockite, I have to agree that LBB is a pretty darn good and usable airport. LBB is fortunate to have had very good airport managers in the past years, despite having a totally dysfunctional city council and poor city managers ( that is actually until recently with Mark McDougal as mayor and the very capable Lew Fox as the new City Manager). I just wish that WF still flew there.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I wasn't expecting the topic to get this interesting, to say the least. My trip to the Midland area is being planned for an last August arrival. And yep, I will definately be checking out the CAF museum there. I can't plan a trip anywhere without checking for any aviation museum in the area. Probably the main reason I'm going to TX is that I may be in a frame of mind on relocating there, but no big-city life for me again. Being from L.A., I simply can't take the smog & traffic like that again. BTW, I'll be asking you all for your help on airfares as the trip gets closer. Thanks again Guys. Hey, this is cool. I was born and raised in Midland, and now I live in Houston. One slight correction: it's the Permian Panthers, Midland Lee Rebel's arch rival.

Here is some interesting trivia about MAF. It was called Midland Air Field and was a Bombadier training base during WWII. The use of the top secret Norton Bomb Sight was trained there. During the oil boom of the late 70's and early 80's, Midland had a Rolls Royce dealership, and it had a promo going that was this: buy a Rolls for 1 Million dollars and they'll throw in a Lear jet 25!!! At that time there were more private planes per capita there than anywhere else in the world.

One of my best friend's father owned a Bell 222, which we were lucky to fly in regularly! His father took me with him to the Bell plant in Arlington Texas and we got a tour of the facilities including a look at the construction of the Osprey. Then we took a 1 and a 1/2 hour flight safety simulator ride. I clocked about 0.5 my self in the 222 simulator.

A prayer from the oil people: Oh God, please give us just one more oil boom, we promise not to piss this one away!

Have fun in Midland!!!

I agree with Tungd.

I grew up in Central/West Texas in a town called Wichita Falls. From the late 1950's to mid 1990's, Wichita Falls had more millionaires per capita than any other city in the US!!! But our airport is pretty pathetic. We now only have AE to DFW with 5 or 6 flights a day. Granted, its only 2 hours to DFW. CO used to fly non-stop jets to Houston. However, the private airport in town still sees quite a few private turbos and jets as the oil money in West Texas still remains. People in West Texas may not be intimidating but many times, have more money than they know what to do with!

I grew up in Raleigh, NC but moved to El Paso in 1993 to attend graduate school at UTEP. I loved the area very much as it was so totally different from anything I had ever experienced. I learned the Spanish language very quickly as it is almost vital to living in a city with an 85% Hispanic population. I do have to agree with the statement earlier that El Paso should probably have been annexed to New Mexico years ago. It definitely has that feel to it. While living in El Paso I was able to travel throughout Texas as WN's fares to other Texas cities were always so low. My personal favorite was San Antonio - What a beautiful city - Even though I must say my visit to The Alamo wasn't at all what I expected. Just this little building in downtown San Antonio with a Wendy's just across the street for God's sakes. That was quite a shock. Riverwalk was fantastic and everything I imagined it would be and more. Overall my memories of El Paso and Texas, New Mexico and Mexico are all wonderful. I met many wonderful and new friends while I was in school and would not trade that experience for anything.
Oh how I miss Midway Airlines. A class act right to then end.

Yes, that is terrible with a Wendy's across the street. It should be a Jack-in-the-Box!! I've been to San Antonio about 8 times now. Been to top ofTower of America's, all around town, Alamodome for SA-SA - Florida">LAL basketball, etc.,yet have not even seen The Alamo! I figure I am not missing much.

I would love to see an old photo of SA - Texas">LBB SA - Texas">MAF or SA - Texas">AMA in late '70s with many big jets at the gates.
