The LCC And The 7e7

All the fuss about the 7e7 v the 330"Coors"Lite got me thinking about something. If the forecasted efficiency of the 7e7 is met or exceeded, could this open the door for the LCC to use a widebody? If it does what about transpac and transatl routes would these become profitable for the average LCC? I know that PeoplExpress and AW both tried intercont'l flights in the past, with miserable consequences. But this is not the 1980's. I guess the idea hinges on whether or not ATA can make their transatl service work. If ATA can, I believe that the age of the intercont'l LCC may happen, as other LCCs will see that intercont'l service works. If ATA fails, well........ I'd guess we won't see B6, F9, WN widebodies in Europe or RyanAir or Easy Jet big boys in the States.

It wouldn't be a stretch for an LCC to order 7E7s in the future, IMO. The 7E7 has a great aquistion cost (about the same as 2 737s) and many LCC's like WN can't add frequency forever. I would expect an LCC to order the -3 variant, which can perform shorthaul, US Transcon, and few transatlantic flights well.

I think that if the long-haul low cost market grows significantly then the 7E7 will be a powerful tool. The imminent launch of Backpackers Xpress and Lufthansa's new long-haul low cost subsidiary may be the start of a new phenomenon.
