America West And PTVs Or 2nd Hand A/C

Tue Jun 01, 2004 9:27 am

I saw this picture yesterday and I noticed the PTVs. I was wondering if HP had a plan to install the PTVs one point? Maybe they were there when HP got the A/C. I thought that the Airbus A/C wsnewlydelivered to HP. Also, why would the cabin have both the LCD screens over the seats and PTVs?
Here is the pic:

Thanks,

at some point some time ago HP was going to install PTVs on their Airbus aircraft, but the project was scrapped for some reason. And as for the LCD question, perhaps that is standard on the Airbus (correct me if i'm wrong) so there was no reason to opt not for the LCDs

NW used to have LCD screens on A320s but got rid of them.

The P-tvs were part of a system that was used by HP and CO. It was an early version that allowed for games, news, maps and other information to be displayed. They were a technical nightmare and I believe that when the company responsible for them went out of business they were removed (most are being removed as the aircraft go into maintenance checks).

Correct you are Prinair! The company did indeed go out of business in the mid to late 90's. Most of the Co 735's had them. I flew EWR-FLL back in that time frame and the plane had the so called ptv's back then. They showed terminal maps, had old nintendo type games, you could purchase sky mall stuff, etc. Nothing to high tech but the company did go bankrupt.

My friend who is a flight attendent for HP gave me the whole story. The PTV's were there and were used for a period of time before 9/11. After 9/11 the airline went into a recession and stopped using them as they already were beginning to do before the attack. The PTV's along with their high operational costs and the fact that the company that made them went out, sometimes would annoy the passengers. On one of my flight post 9/11 from PHX-JFK the PTV's were theire but they did not turn them on. I later learned to my dismay that you had to ask the F/A to turn it on. But shortly after that, they just trashed it all together.

Sorry Airbus3801, you're friend gave you the wrong info. Prinair is right, and the system was inop long before 9/11.
